On the conclusion that it is not .. the only thing I can think of at this point is to try to install IE9 Beta again. ASSUMING YOU CAN, then try to uninstall it. If it is still not listed as uninstallable, I am stumped.
The only thing you can do at that point is wait until FINAL RELEASE, .. and install that and 'settle' for IE9 FINAL. That is IF IE9 FINAL does NOT require uninstalling BETA first.
"The other thing you COULD do is a SYSTEM RESTORE to the day before you originally installed IE9 Beta. "
I know you can do that in Windows 7 and guess that you can in Vista too (can't remember and we don't have a computer with it on at the moment to check it.
You would of course lose everything else that you have done since then so you would be wise to copy any new files and other programs that you have put on since that time so that you can put them back on when you have IE9 gone with the wind.
Hope that it will work one way or another and look forward to hearing how it goes.
I downloaded chrome and I have meebo so I am all set for now. Thankyou all for the brainstorming you did on my behalf. Very generous you all!
Here is what I am 'worried' about. There will be ongoing VISTA updates from MICROSOFT UPDATES as time goes by. Those updates WILL include IE9 FINAL. In a way .. THAT'S GREAT .. as it will 'fix' the IE9 BETA problem ..... OR NOT .. see below.
There is a PECULIAR thing about BETA software. NORMALLY, and update does exactly what is implies. It updates an old version to the current version but with BETA .. this OFTEN does not happen. The BETA HAS to be uninstalled FIRST .. and we cannot seem to do that with your IE9 BETA. Soooo you could have trouble with the IE9 final release and MS UPDATES might get quite 'confused'. It is important you get that BETA off your machine.
Since we cannot do it with an UNINSTALL, .. it is advisable we do it with a SYSTEM RESTORE. That is a 'bit' like killing a fly with a shotgun, but none the less important.
System Restore is a 'last resort', but still an option. It is NOT as destructive as you may think. If you restore your Vista to a date prior to the install of the IE9 Beta .. it will put your system back to that date in time. It is A way to get rid of IE9 BETA!! which is our goal (for several reasons).
What will you 'lose' with a system restore? Nothing too important IF ANYTHING. You will (of course) lose IE9 Beta. You will also 'lose' anything you have INSTALLED since the date of RESTORE. Notice .. INSTALLED. You will NOT lose emails, and other 'personal' things. ONLY THINGS YOU HAVE INSTALLED since then. That is probably anything from nothing (execept IE9 BETA) to some few things that could very likely be reinstalled IF NEEDED such as CHROME.
I know it sounds complicated .. but AT THIS POINT, I truly believe you are better off DOING a system restore to the point closest to before you installed IE9 BETA. I think you have VERY little to lose IF ANYTHING but IE9 BETA.
If you have never done a System Restore, it is easy. It is HIGHLY recommended you run it from VISTA's SAFE MODE. Here is how to do it:
Boot your computer in SAFE MODE. "1.Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.
Click the Start button , click the arrow next to the Lock button , and then click Restart.
2.Press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts (be quick about it). You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
3.On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight the safe mode option you want, and then press ENTER (SAFE MODE without networking should suffice).
4.Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator rights.
When your computer is in safe mode, you'll see the words Safe Mode in the corners of the display.
Now, do the SYSTEM RESTORE:
Using System Restore in Windows
There are two places that you can use the system restore feature from. From within Windows, you can just type restore into the Start menu search box, and youll immediately see System Restore at the top of the start menu Or you can type rstrui into the search box and hit enter. Your choice.
You will immediately see a screen where you can choose to roll back the system to the last restore point but the LAST restore point will not go back far enough for you. . You should NOT select Recommended restore but should choose a different restore point. You will see a list of restore points that you can choose from. Choose one that immediately PRECEDES installation of IE9 BETA. You will have to confirm and then restart your computer to roll the system back.
At that point, .. YOU ARE DONE .. it's EASY. You will be back to where you were before installing IE9 BETA with little to no loss. Anything you DO lose, can easily be reinstalled.
I know this is intimidating .. but if you 'go slow' .. PRINT the instructions on paper, .. it is not as hard as it sounds. OF COURSE, it is entirely up to you .. but it is what I would do in your situation. You can give it a try .. knowing you can (reasonably) CANCEL if you change your mind or for whatever reason, don't want to do this.
Just know that Vista will show you various 'restore points' with dates. It may even show you the restore point for when you INSTALLED IE9 BETA, so you would choose the point JUST BEFORE THAT. It is that simple .. and you are 'GOOD TO GO'. If you have insalled GOOGLE CHROME (for example), you would 'lose' that .. because you are back to the date you restored from .. but that is OK .. BECAUSE YOU GOT RID OF IE9 BETA!!. If you LOVE CHROME, .. you can install it again after the restore.
The point is .. with a System Restore point near to and BEFORE your installation of IE9 Beta.. your machine is back to THAT DATE for INSTALLED software (not emails and stuff like that .. you will still have all that).
I suggest you access System Restore .. on your Vista Machine. You can SEE (pretty much) what you will 'lose' BEFORE you execute the actual restore .. and can cancel if you change your mind. If, on the otherhand, the restore indicates you will lose 'only' IE9 Beta, Chrome, and maybe a few other things (all being recapturable after the restore), then it is a good choice to do the restore.
I'm sorry you have been presented with this 'nightmare', but done right, you can recover from it fairly easy.
IF YOU HAVE NOT installed IE9 beta browser .. you are (pretty much) OK. If you have .. then you are more a part of this thread.
If you have NOT installed that Beta .. submit a feedback form to DS that you cannot 'get' the MEEBO CHAT BAR.
http://www.dailystrength.org/help/feedback
If you HAVE installed that Beta product ..you need to UNINSTALL it .. go through this thread for HOW TO DO THAT. If you have problems doing it .. let me know in a PRIVATE MESSAGE and I will try to help you.
As for the MEEBO problem ..DS is right .. need to contact MEEBO SUPPORT. Be sure to tell them you are using MEEBO from within DAILYSTRENGTH.
If I can help you further, let me know.
I was using meebo earlier this evening and it was working fine. I don't even know how to get to meedbo support with this window being disabled - or whatever happened to it.
It is POSSIBLE something is wrong ... something that needs 'fixing', but more likely the MEEBO server is 'down' .. not taking log in requests. Thing about that is .. there would be thousands of people complaining they can't log in ...
SOOOOOo, ... I recommend you take the problem to Meebo. Go to www.meebo.com and you should see a link to SUPPORT where you can report the problem to them. Tell them you cannot log onto MEEBO .. describe what happens. BE SURE to tell them you are using MEEBO from the www.dailystrength.org website.
