Don't think there is Cave..........guess a long as you can read and type.........LOL (oh wait ....thats not necessarily true)................but I do know DS has lots of "Teen" groups...............so I don't think there is a limit...........could be wrong, been wrong plenty of times:)

It would seem to me that some groups that DS allows free access to should have an age limit for membership. The talk on some of them is VERY explicit. That's o.k. for adults even though some seem TOO explicit, as you, deb, mentioned in another thread here. :(

Facebook and myspace can be far more explicit.

Yes, FB, myspace, twitter etc can be and ARE more explicit. That's deplorable because children can access that with no oversight by FB, only the parents can do that. But FB isn't the subject here.

This is DS----- where their goal is "DailyStrength's only objective is to maintain a safe, supportive environment".

i do agree that there are some groups on here that kids shouldn't be in but on the other hand, there is nothing that stops these kids from lying about their age when putting in a date of birth either. i think the responsibility of what children view and don't view starts at home with parents who monitor their children.

I'm just saying that if you're worried about the danger to children, there are other sites that would seem more attractive and enticing to children than DS.

Besides how would you monitor age here? You don't have to post an age. And you can lie.

So, I don't know if DS has age restrictions or not, but like debbear said, there are teen related groups on DS. Plus some young people have illnesses for which they need support., especially from their peers. I belong to a specific disease group here where several teens have posted due to having the disease since they were small children and they're looking for others who are in the same boat in terms of age and experiences.

I think it comes down to parents monitoring which sites their kids go to when they use the computer at home or from their smart phones.

In case I didn't say this before----- it's certainly not the sites FOR teens with health or other issues that I'm talking about. Perhaps I was misunderstood.

From what I know about blocking a web site ( I've never had to do that) it can cost $$. That's o.k. if the parent(s) can afford it.

There are free ways but they take some doing. Then to unblock them also 'takes some doing'. Not every parent is computer literate. Not every parent would take the time to 'do' and 'undo' that each day. I applaud the ones who do! I just didn't think that DS would have to be the blocked web site. Or should be.

Then there are the ways that minors get around that by the simple expedient of going to a friends house. (Remember that dodge that many of us used when wanting to do something our parents forbade? lol)

No, I wouldn't have thought that the curious and active mind of a minor would have found anything of interest at DS either. But I was wrong.
I 'learned' male anatomy by visiting the art museum or going to the library when I was a kid. LOL

But that was before the Internet. Now, if I were a child today, I not only could learn about male anatomy on the Internet but other things that I'm sure I wouldn't have learned at a museum. Like the length and width of someone's penis posted here at DS. :) Would that scar me for life? No. But I bet if I got caught passing that information around on Twitter my parents would whomp on me. LOL

You can learn about male and female genitalia in health class too.

Or from movies, or magazines or whatever. This is older than time, just a different medium.

I think I forgot an important point (about age limit). I think that anyone can read DS threads without joining. Is that correct?

So my DS and age limit is a non-starter. Blocking it 'might' be a possibility for some parents if they're worried.

DS seems to be very liberal in what they allow and very rigid for others. But, hey, I luv 'em anyway. I learn a lot here.

It's got nothing to do with actually enforcing those rules.

I think sites that DO have age restrictions have them in place just to further lessen the already very slight chance of bearing any sort of liability.

They do have an age limit, it's 13.

I got several younger members deleted but in some cases the ages are actually not correct and I'm guessing DS ask them to confirm.

Yeah, I think over a 100 is to old! :~) Why do they have the years all the way back to 1900?
