Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis Support Group
Crohn's disease is a systemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) of unknown cause, that results in chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract. It can affect the entire gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus, and can also cause complications outside of the gastrointestinal tract. There is no known medical or surgical cure for Crohn's disease, but there are many medical...
However, if you look past those unfortunate statements I think that underneath all that he really wants to help people.
Lets all try to take a step back and start over again.
Im actually curious about this book...
If it has helped you all so much..
I rather we disagree than censor each other. I hold no hard feelings towards anyone on this site, even when we disagree. The discussion is important and interesting.
Sentient, I think I got the specific carb diet book "Breaking the Vicious Cylce" from Amazon.com.
And I still think Squasher's dog is so freakin' cute.
It's all good.
I know the SCD has worked for a lot of people, and it does allow meat, so it is worth a try, but like I said the science behind natural hygiene and self healing in Dave Kleins book really makes a lot of sense and isn't just the theory of one person, it is pretty well known and followed by people who have run out of options.
Trouble is, the longer you have something like this, I think the harder it gets to try ANYTHING, especially something so prescriptive.
I'm not sure I'm strong enough, especially at the moment, but as the strength flows back perhaps I can try.
What happens to someone who LOVES food and cooking though?
Vegan and raw. I'm not sure, a few months is one thing, but is there ANYONE out there who's tried it or anything like it for many years?
Regarding the book. If you do decide to order please take the author's warning seriously.
1) Do it in conjunction with and the support of your GI. If they summarily dismiss it as trssh then defy them to refute the claims or find another doc.
2) Read the bulk of the book at least 3-4 times as the information provided can be overwhelming.
3) If you are seriously ill go slowly and follow the advise to the letter.
If anyone wants to ask me specifics feel free. I'm just a neophyte but I might be able to help.
Regards
Steve
I have a hard time drinking vegetable juice. I'd rather just eat the vegetables whole. Before I had my resection in August, I was on a low-residue diet. This type of plan was not an option for me because if I have too much fiber, I obstruct, unfortunately. But I think I could try something like this now, although I can't eat broccoli or apples. I've tried both since the surgery and each time, I was in some serious agony.
Also, does it say you can't eat bread or pasta?
I really appreciate the extra information. I looked up the book online and wondered about these questions.
What I found was initially during healing phase ...very strict with diet and jucing deatiled below:
Juiced 2 medium apples(I used Pink Lady available in UK supermarkets, can use any medium sweet apple i guess) and 1-2 sticks celery (hate celery taste ..but this is nice)..ATLEAST 4 times /day....added carrot to 2 of the glasses...(very good to get some Raw Veg with fruit)...
Total amount FRESHLY SQEEZED juice consumed 300-330 ml each serving
Also ate 3-5 RIPE bananas( BIG PART OF PROCESS)...depending on level of hunger....first 2 days ...this was my diet...thereafter for next few days I added steamed Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes,carrots...with some oil and light Lemon dressing...you can have other veg as well.
Ocassionaly added BLACK Grapes (not green or red,as citricy )
Also had Papaya fruit (very good for digestion)You can also juice greens (kale ,okra and others)...I never did but am sure would help..
Didnt bother with eating fruit....but if you do ..can eat few ...but avent got details to hand but Apples & Pears are OK..... BUT NO SKINS...as body in our condition cannot easily digest...
NO citrus fruits and tomatoes during healing Ulcerative condition..
No Fizzies ,caffeine, PROCEESED foods , No dairy particularly milk,No meat and fish...wheat & flour items....all this atleast until cured state...
This routine I strictly carried out for approx as I can best recall ..10 -14 days ...by now I was completly Pain ,Mucus and Blood Free and stools were totally normal and clear of all blood
As i got better ..i started on normal cooked meals allbeit vegetarian...but was able to now eat Fried ,Asian Spicy ,oily foods, Pizzas, veg burgers, bread, wheat & flour products etc etc...basically anything in moderation ...barring Milk...and have not had any relapses....SO WHY HAVE I GOT AWAY WITH CONTRADICTING BOOK ADVICE?
I think it is the all important 2 doses of Apple and Celery juice that is STILL healing ,detoxing and maintaining condition...THIS with better overall diet is keeping me in remisssion or cured state.
So it is very possible BUT ONLY AFTER HEALING PROCESS ,you POSSIBLY may be able to consume meat and fish...but I stress possibly...so have best of both worlds...but no slip up on the Jucing to maintain condition.
I guess this is reward to look forward to during that initial difficult period...
God i pray it works this way for all as it has for myself....as some including author might feel this not best advice....I guess the proof will be in the trial...just give a try and focus on the good results possible when you have difficult days during initial diet phase...
Last note...As I was getting better...had gradually started reducing steroid doses....and slowly came of altogether....THIS IS IMPORTANT AS YOU CANNOT JUST SUDDENLY STOP IN ONE GO ...HAVE TO WEAN OF SLOWLY !!...
HOWEVER YOU MUST TAKE ADVICE FROM YOUR DOCTOR !!! REGARDING COMING OF ANY MEDIACTIONS INCLUDING steroids...
The author describes how the natural body cannot tolerate drugs too well and thus effects the process of healing ....since as method is trying to heal .. in addition is having to battle with strong medication..therefore if you are able to SAFELY WITH ADVICE... reduce medication dosages gradually ..this will also help accelerate healing...
Cheers
Steve
He does recommend organic produce, but it isn't necessary. No pasta or bread allowed.....there are recipes and guidelines for the healing phase of the diet and after healing. It is very hard, but I think it is worth it. I totally agree with Indi - the juicing is very important. I didn't juice at first, but then I got a juicer and immediately saw a major change in my energy level.
My "healing diet" consists of basically fruit and juice in the mornings, and for lunch and dinner I usually have a baked potato and some steamed veggies. I have been eating salads lately as well. I "cheat" and have bread now and then, but I shouldn't because I end up being a little constipated. I don't plan to be a "raw vegan" for the rest of my life, and again it is very hard to stick to this diet, but I can do it for now. And now I am finding that I don't even want meat. I tasted some sausage today while making my husband some soup and it didn't taste good to me at all and the texture was sort of gross!
Anyway, it's a wonderful thing to be feeling well and to be off all meds....I keep myself motivated this way. Feel free to email with any questions. Also Dave Klein is readily available to answer questions as well. He does require that you read the book first, and he does charge for the initial consultation, but I have spoken to him several times and he is very encouraging and makes himself available for support.
I've been at this a LONG time and I'm not feeling at my strongest, but even if I can do some, it sounds like there is some good stuff in it
