Crohn's disease is a systemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) of unknown cause, that results in chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract. It can affect the entire gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus, and can also cause complications outside of the gastrointestinal tract. Food DOES make a difference....

....at least for me it does....
I really don't understand how some doctor's can say Crohns has nothing to do with how you eat....
I have been doing mostly clean eating for over a month now as well as daily exercise and prednisone/asacol treatment for newly diagnosed Crohns Colitis. Everything was very rosy - I have felt better than I have in a LONG time - up until I made poor diet decisions on Memorial Day. Vienna Beef Hot Dogs and fries at the baseball game I went to. It's amazing, my favorite hot dog now tastes SO SALTY since I have switched to clean eating. Dinner included 2 slices of pizza.
The next day I was back to my clean eating routine, however, my body didn't want me to forget what I had done to myself the day before....INCREDIBLY gassy and mucous again. Haven't experienced that since treatment.
It really sucks to think that I may have to significantly reduce my happy foods even more. At least not have so much of it in one day, because a little here and there every couple of days doesn't bother me.

On some Gateways I get them back. On other's not so much and so frustrating. Please if you will explain...

But this wasn't just any shitty food episode lol. These are all new experiences for me. I'm trying to figure out how my body works all over again. it sucks.
Pills help but you must eat healthy to really see a difference
If you eat a bunch of crap after not eating it for so long, that will make you feel like shit. For instance, I can't even imagine what it's like to eat a bucket of KFC since I've not eaten KFC since the early 80s. I suspect I'd have a mean case of cramps and diarrhea from it, and it would have nothing to do with my UC.
The trouble is that we can't see our insides in order to determine when the inflammation has subsided.
Eating well during a flare is going to greatly ease your symptoms, but unfortunately it doesn't treat the under lying cause, which is what the medication does. Once you get off the steriods and the inflammation is under control, diet doesn't mean nearly as much.... That's the good news!
I know at first it's hard to wrap your head around treating your symptoms vs reaching remission.
You'll reach remission! I promise... And while yes there are bad drs out there.... Trust me... There are also great ones too.
there is no specific diet or food that causes IBD, and no specific diet or food that cures IBD.
A person can eat a healthy diet 100% of the time, and still have crohn's or colitis. a person can eat shitty food 100% of the time and not have any problems. the food is not the problem. BUT, people with IBD may have more inflammation after eating certain foods (which vary from patient to patient), because the disease causes the response to the food, not because the food causes the disease.
Eating healthy food makes everyone feel healthier. I am confident that every single doctor in the world will tell their patients to eat healthy and not eat shitty food, regardless of their health status.
beedahosen, doctors are not paid to prescribe medicine. they are paid to diagnose and treat patients using proven, effective methods and treatments. if there was evidence that diet can cause or cure IBD, docs would be prescribing a certain diet as treatment, but that alone is not enough to get us into remission. there is no conspiracy to get us to take unnecessary meds.
You are what you eat, which is why I said shitty food makes people feel shitty. So I don't think anyone is disputing that. If you eat a generally poor diet, that can contribute to diabetes, heart disease, etc and make you feel rotten. But that doesn't mean that food is specifically linked to IBD. So when GI docs say food doesn't matter, what I think they're saying is that it's not the cause of your disease and it's not the cure for our disease and it may or may not help you with symptoms of the disease and there's no compelling scientific data that proves specific foods are going to make it all better for everyone. For some, you can eat like complete shit and never have an IBD flare up, and for others you can eat clean and healthy and you can flare up. I mean if food were the issue, then why do people who eat really healthy still get sick?
The pharmaceutical industry is a business and there's lots of money to be made. No one disputes that. But so is the supplement/vitamin industry and so is the diet industry. I'm not saying Pharmaceutical companies aren't trying to influence doctors. But I don't think we aught to let that concept get in the way of common sense, which is that there are many medications, many of which are generic, that are proven effective in treating IBD.
I don't believe doctors dissuade people from a healthy diet and lifestyle in order to prescribe certain medications. If that were the case, why would doctors even bother telling their patients over and over again to lose weight, eat healthy and exercise. They'd just give them a pill for every little thing and tell them to go ahead and smoke a pack of cigs a day, eat a whole pizza and sit on their asses for the rest of their life. Holy crap, sign me up. I mean, getting my internist to prescribe anything is like pulling teeth.
Now give me a slice of that zza
