Lung Coil Procedure

As I was backing my car into my driveway after a beautiful late summer drive in the countryside of NH today, my PA (Physicians Assistant) from Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston was calling me. At first I was a bit apprehensive to answer it knowing that she's calling to let me know that I didn't qualify for the procedure.

All of you are the first to know that I have been accepted for the Lung Coil Procedure and I will know within a couple of weeks when the actual procedure date will be. I need to have a consult with the anesthesiologist prior to being admitted and within a couple of days after the consult I will receive the coils.

I was turned down for the Lung Valves when I was accepted to participate in this clinical trial in January 2014, but through sheer determination, patience, a lot of praying and the positive attitude of my PA, Aishatu Aloma, we finally made it.

I will let you know what happens next and I wish everyone here a chance to improve your breathing and quality of life no matter what procedure is chosen as long as it makes us feel better!

Wow that's great , it seems you and I have both been through the ringer trying to get this procedure and like you I'm getting mine done here in philly at temple university I will know when this week but had my ct scan this past week and they want to do it fast while i'm still in lung rehab. I'll be in the hospital 2 days for observation then back home. for this group i plan on having my putor with me and to update as often as I can and if i'm feeling up to it . from what the doctors said i'm getting about 20 coils in one lung then in 2 to 3 months their do the other lung. I hope you guys don't mind me rambling i'm excited and now I have a friend here going through it with me.please everyone wish us luck

Congratulations! Thank you for posting! I am now looking into it for my dad! Also, have you heard of the Lung Flute?? That sounds promising too!!! Yay for you! Congrats again! This is exciting and promising news! Thank you for posting, I had never heard of the coils until your post, and I am grateful to you for it!

I have a question about the coil clinical trials. Since they call it a trial, does that mean that there is a control group of patients who actually don't get the coils? And how would that happen. Do they actually role patients in the surgery room "pretending" to give them the coil and the don't really get them? If yes-I don't understand why trials are still necessary. Coils have been used for years now and they should have all the results in.

to answer Heike55's question.

With the study I'm with (web address is on a previous reply with this topic), you have to qualify for the Randomized Group and then the computer spits out the winners of the procedure. The rest of the group will be observed for a year with more testing during that year and if all goes well with the people in that group, you can have the coils implanted then. There is no "placebo" group with this study.

I have no idea how many people are in the Randomized Group. I will ask my PA and get back to you.

By the way, speaking of my PA, she called me today and gave me my procedure dates: Sept. 29th- consult with the anesthesiologist and the procedure will be on October 2nd.
