I live in the U.K and the price of housing here is astronomical ,and being a small country it leads to overcrowding , I am thinking tentatively of moving to the states in a years time so just wanted to know really , do you have to be rich over there just to get a decent house?
p.s any Canadians feel free to comment as Canada is also on my 'list'

Since you are an artist, maybe start with the areas that are influenced by this profession. Not just the larger cities either. I am finding that that the small towns I am visiting have a very active artist group.
If you intend to find employment, can't help you there.

The price of housing varies greatly depending on the part of the country you prefer to live and what type of housing you prefer.
Right now in just about all parts of the country a single family dwelling can be purchased at a relatively low price now because of the economy.There are many foreclosures on houses through out the country and the rental industry has also taken a pretty good hit from the low economy. I looked at a new construction 1800 square foot house, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom single level recently and it was priced at 189,000.00 US dollars. 2 years ago, that same house in the same area would have sold or been on the market in the low to mid $300,000.00. This house is in the Western part of Oregon. A friend of mine just bought a beautiful house that is 3 years old, in West Texas that is a little bigger than the one here, for $127,000. So location will make a big difference in the price you will pay, whether it be renting or buying.
On a humorous note, if you get in a real bind, maybe Chelsey could loan some money !! You don't have to be rich to live here, but it sure does help if you are !!

Generally speaking, the middle & southern part of the U.S. is the most affordable. NYC is as bad as London. For some reason Artists communities tend to be expensive, like Taos N. Mexico. If you like hot weather Savannah Georgia has a very large art community & not too expensive. Small, very historic city, with a well known art school & lots of students. Almost any college town has an art community. Deb
Seattle and Portland are less expensive than LA. or San Fran. But all have many cities around them that are significantly less expensive than the "Big Boys".
Law is right- at this time housing purchases in most areas are better then they've been for a long while.
Lots of "art colonies" across the US- pretty much as I expect seen in GBR. Just depends on things you want.. city, town, boondocks... mountains, ocean desert etc.

The hamptons are the rich section on eastern Long Island, NY. I have been there and it is pretty by way overpriced.
