Common Variable Immunodeficiency Support Group
Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a group of 20-30 primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) which have a common set of symptoms but with different underlying causes. CVID's underlying causes are different, but the result of these are that the body doesn't produce sufficient antibodies in response to exposure to pathogens.
Question for those of you with PORTs. I am starting my third round of IV antibiotics. We have had no issues with my PORT thus far other than irritation directly following surgery, but couldn't get blood return today. I know that people often use it anyways without ever getting blood return, but mine has always worked beautifully, and been accessed with one stick. We had to do several flushes and attempts to get it accessed with blood return today, and it was strange. Could that happen from it being accessed and in use so long (2 months now)? What is your experience with this?
last week i had trouble..it took a few times to get blood flow...my infusion was a wk late due to thanksgiving..that hadn't happened in a long time...
is yours run under your collar bone or through your neck vein? if it is your neck vein you can usually see if if your tense your neck muscles... running through the neck vein makes for less trouble. my first 2 where run under the collarbone...they didn't last as long (actually the second one lasted 2 wks it was defective so i really shouldn't count that one!) the one through the neck vein has been in place since 2011 and last week was the first time i had trouble...
don't worry too much it does happen...i did have my first one come loose and during my infusion it infiltrated...it was ok the nurses were worried but i told them it was no different than sub q and they did settle down a bit... we finished the infusion in my vein and after i went for a dyd xray and it was determined the tubing pulled loose...it was run under the collar bone and it pulled out...after the defective one my surgeon researched and found that the neck vein was a better placement and i had the new one placed by my next infusion and was able to use it... so it can come loose but you should know it when it does... blood return happens even to a healthy port. if you continue to have problems a quick dye xray will determine if it is working... i have never had my doc say to be careful...i once had a nurse tell me to be careful when i get massages but my doc debunked that info...
they can heck easy with the dye xray... they access your port shoot dye in it and watch it in the xray they can determine right then if there is a problem...in fact you will be able to see it yourself...
