My guess is the nurse missed the port. I had that happen once in an er
the girl flushed into my chest and it hurt for a week.
Did they use just one hepron flush the last time it was sealed?
I have had my port three years. That time in the er was the only issue.
Always ask for a port nurse or a cancer nurse to do your access if you are in hosp and ask for a different one if they do not access first time

My home health nurse does it every time, so it was the same nurse as I've always had and she's never missed it. I know she had a stressful day today though and was a little anxious so it's possible she missed. I did one heparin lock after the last one, which was only pulled 5 days ago. It is so sore tonight. I got poked a few times though so I'm sure it's just sore from accessing, just don't want to have that issue again! I am also super dehydrated, don't know if that can cause issues with draw back. Thanks for your help!

I had a port for a year and a half and had one day where my blood was clotting really really fast and no matter how much they flushed they couldn't do it. They couldn't get blood from my veins either at the same time. A week later, no problem.

My chest was so sore from the flush into my chest. Try a warmed wash cloth put it into the micro for 30 sec careful test the heat of it first. Heat helps ease the discomfort.

I was on TPN for 5 months and we used my port, so it was reaccessed on a weekly basis. I did have one time where my nurse tried three times and got no return..Had to go to the infusion center a couple days later after the soreness went away and the nurse there had no problem accessing the port...guess it just was being stubborn...

I've had this one for a year and a half now...Give it a rest for a couple days, and try again..

We got it accessed with blood return last night after a couple tries. This morning I am getting no blood return again. Uggg. It is flushing okay, just very sore without blood draw back. I called to let them know and they said as long as it is flushing we will use it without blood. I wish I could give it a break for a few days!! I am on IV antibiotics again and have to have it accessed! Thank y'all for your help! It's so strange!

Gosh, okay. It stopped flushing this afternoon. When I pulled it out it had junk all over it and bled a lot. Guess it was irritated and blood crusted onto my needle. They came to re access and no blood return again. We are going to use it and when they come back to change it out on Monday they will run TPA? through it to see if there's clotting that needs to be broken up. I am really just bothered by the blood return because my Colorado stay is in a week and I need to be able to use my port for all the labs. My arms will be shredded if they are drawing labs from them. This is why I got the port, it bothers me that I'm not able to use it for all that I should.

Hi my daughter has just been diagnosed a couple days ago with CVID They said they going to do 3 Infusions via vein and then put a Port in...They said she wont be able to do any contact sport and she loves dancing, soccer etc Just wondering if any of you with Ports have played sport successfully or any tips be great in regards to the port. My daughter is only 7. Thanks and sorry if I have asked in the wrong spot, new to this page also.

TPA might help, make sure they leave it in long enough..I had one nurse do TPA but only left it in 15 minutes it didn't do anything, we did it again and left it in about an 1 1/2 hours and then port worked fine..

Hope they get it working good before your trip.

To the above comment...my nurses advised that I should not engage in any contact sports when I was trying to go out of town for a soccer tourney recently. I called my surgeons office on it and my surgeon told me to go play!! Dancing should not be an issue. Discuss soccer with them. You really just don't want to injure the device or yourself if it gets directly hit. You need to take precautions. Make the school aware when she gets it as well, so they will take precautions with recess or PE classes involving close contact. Something to discuss with your team!

Thank you MissSophie! My nurse is coming today to try to get it working. Good to know about the TPA. They think it's clotted as it still isn't working properly and super sore. Fingers crossed!!

it happens to me sometimes..usually flushing it will get it going I have had 3 ports and everyone has had it happen not a lot but at times..

I have had my port for six years now. The only time I did not have blood return was when the nurse had used to small of a gauge of port needle. The gauge of the needle does make a difference. Over time you can develope fibrin sheath, then the cath flow is used to open it back up. I have never had to use it on my port. As an RN I did occasionally have to use cath flow when a port had not been flushed with heparin before deaccessing. If you have a power port the company recommends a 19 gauge needle. That is the first thing you may want to check.

Thank you! I have had it for 2 months now. We used the same needle size the whole time, and did attempt to access with a larger one recently with no difference. It is flushed with heparin after any drug is administered, and any time it is deaccessed. We didn't get it fixed today, and a lot of resistance with flushing again. Will try again Thursday if it will work until then. It is a power port, so that's good to know. This thing is stubborn!! I appreciate the info.
