Update:
I seriously miscalculated that I could continue to successfully work with the women of the board for which I was president.
One of the ancillary members requested that a woman, who had been particularly abusive to me, be assigned an ancillary position with the organization which would require my approval and appointment. I had put her off a few times in emails. She appeared to accept my reasoning (which did not mention the other woman). Then at a Board meeting last night she went into a long tirade in front of everyone about how her job was so difficult and she needed help. I agreed after her rant that I was not aware of all the responsibilities she had for her position and help was warranted. The abusive lady said she wanted the position and I responded that I would consider her among other candidates. Then the first lady threatened to quit if her choice for the position was not approved. There were several other members of the board and ancillary members who ganged up on me throughout the discussion. I ended the meeting before saying my final decision.
I reached out to the other voting members of my board for advicw but got no response to my email. I woke up at 1 AM unable to sleep, trying to think of how I would work through this, staying on the board with individuals who didn't like me. I realized this was the opportunity for an out that I had been wanting for a while..
Over the last 9 years since I graduated and started working in my field, I've seen how other individuals use their leadership experience in Non-profit organizations to achieve other goals in their careers and be promoted. Or, someone who owns their own business uses the volunteer exposure to help bolster their business. This week when I was thinking about my own goals for why I was continuing as the president, I realized I didn't have any. I could come up with one single personal goal I would accomplish by continuing in this volunteer capacity. The only reason I had to stay was that I had made a commitment to serve and didn't want to bail out on that commitment. Plus, I didn't want to be embarrassed by quitting so quickly after I accepted the position.
I don't think that anyone will fault me for quitting after the fiasco that happened last night. The meeting revealed that there is some deep rooted dysfunction in that group and I want nothing to do with it going forward. Honestly, in my personal life I hadn't told many people I had the leadership position because once I started volunteering and found out just how bad things were in the organization I felt embarrassed to say I was leading this group.
I hate burning bridges. It was something I used to do early in my life and when I began working again post graduation I wanted to make sure that left all my positions on good terms. There will definitely be some fallout with me quitting the board. There were some things I had hoped to do in the future like possibly teach as an adjunct professor or design and present containing education. I don't think I will be able to do that in Nevada as the people on this board are all connected to the universities. There may be other opportunities elsewhere that present in the future. For now I am at peace with my decision. I see fewer migraines and visits to the chiropractor for tense muscles. Plus, I get all those hours I would have spent volunteering back to myself.

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

It's been some time since my last post...sorry. I've been going through a challenging time with the sale of my home, purchase of a condo and my adult asperger son that lives with me. I've had days where I couldn't get out of bed, days where I stayed in my pj's and days where all I managed to do was eat, drink fluids and take care of my Sweet Mia kitty. Sweet Mia came to me from a shelter about...

I hope you can find a job that can make you happy and I hope you can find some peace.
Since this is volunteer work, it might be better to just let it go, practice radical acceptance of what you can actually fix or what exactly you have the power over. Your feelings have percolated for a long time. Sometimes we tell ourselves to keep going, give second chances, etc.
Maybe it is better to listen to our gut instincts first and foremost and not try to control the situation to make it better. Sometimes we know early on. Your embarrassment or shame about this is misplaced I think. You tried and it failed BUT you are not a failure. Your health needs to be a priority and this volunteer things very likely doesn't help your mind and body.
After a few years of working with this person we have come to a mutual respect. I have come to realize that the behavior that I found annoying is driven by a need for her to build up her self esteem. I can’t know what has happened in her life to require this need. It just is.
We have to do a lot of reports and paperwork has never been my strong suit. She’s gone out of her way to help me with ones that I haven’t encountered before and that know it all attitude is something that I have learned to deal with.
Now I compliment the weight loss effort that is showing or how much I like her son. It’s amazing how much this has changed the dynamics.
There’s a relaxation of the original personality I first met.
Other members who have been around longer than I have are still bothered and it just perpetuates the dynamic.
Good luck with coming to a conclusion with this
If you feel there is no solution to the many different personalities to find the true purpose "Volunteer Success" for those in need, then maybe it's time to resign...I wouldn't quit, but give them notice...you don't need to explain yourself to anyone...it's your choice....perhaps your talents are needed with another organization and a new door will open.
Peace and Healing To You <3
