Hello,
I have an issue that I am really confused about. My immediate family that lives in the area near me is extremely dysfunctional. There was a lot of domestic violence and abuse (toward me) and I had to cut loose.
Over the years, I had maintained contact with my extended family who live a couple thousand miles away. I would visit every year or so since about 2006-2008 until about 2019. I would visit them approximately yearly both before I stopped spending holidays with my immediate family and after. My cousin (the extended family member) knew that my immediate family was abusive and that there were incidents. She encouraged me to not participate in this. We didn't talk about it a lot, but we would keep in touch by phone occasionally, and I would visit here and there. My last visit was in early 2019.
Since the pandemic, she refuses to speak with me. Occasionally she will answer texts back, but the last time that I spoke with her via phone was March of 2020 when this whole thing started. I had some unanswered messages, so I didn't keep pressing it, this was in late 2020. Now here we are about two years later, my therapist said that maybe the pandemic was bothering her. So, I gave her some space. Two years of space is an awful lot. I don't have any family left. So, with some hesitancy, I called again today. Didn't pick up, again. Didn't return the message I left late last year.
I feel really devastated. I don't want to be over dramatic, but this has been happening consistently for quite some time now, and so I'm left to ask myself, what are my choices. Or, do I have a choice? Probably not. My one option appears to be to give up. TBH I'm totally baffled. After my boyfriend dumped me in March of 2020, I was so upset, I thought, "well at least I have my family to talk to." As a few months into the pandemic wore on, I realized, no, I don't. I have no one, nobody, nada, period. I have a few friends and that's it. My ex cut me out of his life and now my extended family is cutting me out of theirs and I have absolutely no idea why. I'd say it was because of the abuse that happened in my immediate family and they took sides with this, but that was long known-and that was not an issue before.
So why am I constantly judged and excluded and put at arm's length by nearly everyone in my life except for a few friends. I'm honestly baffled. I work, I better myself, I stay out of trouble, I'm an honest person, I've done a lot of work on myself in therapy, so what gives? I am the last on seemingly everyone's priority list. If I invite people places, my calls don't get returned or there are always these excuses. If it's something THEY are interested in, they are right on it and it's top priority.
I am honestly baffled and devastated. On my dad's side, his sister cut us off like this 20 years ago and would refuse to speak to any of us no matter what. I gave up, and continued to resume relationships with this other cousin.
It's happening all over again. I honestly don't know if I can handle this.

It's been some time since my last post...sorry. I've been going through a challenging time with the sale of my home, purchase of a condo and my adult asperger son that lives with me. I've had days where I couldn't get out of bed, days where I stayed in my pj's and days where all I managed to do was eat, drink fluids and take care of my Sweet Mia kitty. Sweet Mia came to me from a shelter about...

If I come to DS and it won't do anything when I click "Login", I go to a post, click and then click "Leave a Reply". Then it will let me log in.Of course, sometimes DS just goes to "Error 504". Then I can't log in.

I have very similar situation. Not feeling that great right now but I wanted to write you a short message just to say hi and give support. I am going to try to add you on here as a friend. Let's stay in contact.
I have similar stuff going on in my family, very similar. More later. You take care and hang in there. Sounds like it is not you, it's them but it still really hurts. Hugs, W
Sounds to me like you are not ready to let go...I understand, I'm in the same boat...only all of my family has passed and I've only got a few friends...one of which I'm in the same pickle...I call her, she says "I'll call back tomorrow' and the call never comes...I'm the one who continues the calling, text, email etc. Happened yesterday Again.
I question myself till I'm blue in the face, and I honestly don't get an answer. I have a fear of loosing "another person" in my life and am not ready to confront...I will though, one more time asking "have I done something or hurt your feelings"...haven't decided to call or send a card in the mail....I've known her since late 80's and we come and go in talking with each other....I'm the one who re=establishes contact.
In Alanon, the focus is on Us and What Is In Our Best Interests....when I'm ready, no drama, just request an answer to do you still want to hear from me? Best to you~~
I only have a sibling and a cousin left. My cousin is an alcoholic and simply could not keep a relationship with me going because I don't drink like that. This cousin kept telling me they lost my phone number. Three times. I pursued and chased. Then I realized this cousin simply can't have a relationship and I stopped. I let go and detached.
You are possibly chasing a dream, a fantasy, and it only hurts you more. This cousin doesn't want a relationship with you, like my cousin also doesn't want one with me. It is not about us as us. It is about something damaged or broken inside of them that makes them be this dysfunctional way. Let it go. We have to do our own work, inside our minds and heads, and stop doing things that hurt ourselves. You are worth taking the time to see this situation in another light, to gain new perspective and stop making it what it can't be. You'll be happier to stop chasing people who can't give you what you want. I've done this all my life and finally now in my old age have I realized how much I hurt myself. Its not about you, its not your fault, they can't be who you want them to be. So let go, detach with love, and focus on those in your life who want to be with you. If you have none, then start to make friends with high character quality people by observing humans and recognizing dysfunctional behaviors. You deserve to be your own best friend.
Amen. Amen. Amen
Now that I 'know" I'll wait her her call...if a call comes Wonderful....if not, I know I've done my best and will """let go of an expectation which is hurtful to me""" detach wishing her well and with kindness from my heart
