I usually like to take meds that have been on the market for a long time. That way, all the kinks have been worked out and I'm not a guinea pig for the pharmaceutical companies. Too many meds have turned out to have horrible side effects and then get pulled off the market. Look at Plavix vs. Coumadin and all the problems Plavix is having now. Coumadin has been around since the dawn of time and we know all the possible side effects from it.
My first rheumatologist believed that the old drugs were better and she never steered me wrong. I think some docs are pressured by drug companies to push the new drugs. Of course, they may blindly believe that the new drugs are better. I'll stick with the old ones.
