Thats one of the mind fucks of being in the odd sort of relationship I had. The assets a person has in any normal relationship, become liabilities in an abusive one.
And what makes things weird afterwards are to figure out how to NOT admonish myself for them, but to continue liking them enough to keep them, to not become jaded so much that I see myself as deeply flawed, but rather a good enough person asking for something she just couldnt handle in the end.
I wish I could see how I could have done things differently, but I am blind to it. All I saw was how impossible he was.
newbies see this (long before they are ready to even think about it)
i think these threads are useless, none of us know what really happened
I guess my really big fault, was in thinking I could help him heal from his abusive childhood- that my family and I would show him all the joys and good things a family brings. I never should have entered a relationship with someone who "needed fixing". I can say I'm pretty sure I've learned that lesson now. The bigger problem for me will be learning to balance not wanting someone that "needs fixing" and still being open and loving to a person's normal foibles and faults.
Another thing I do way too much is blame myself for everything that happens, and then I feel resentful of him. But, once again that is for me to own.
I didn't set boundaries in my marriage or my life for that matter. I have learned/am still learning to set boundaries.
I think there is soo much more, but these were the ones I could think of.
Another one for myself: harboring resentment. I would rehash things in my head for so long and let it build and build, being "passive agressive", until I would explode about what was sometimes just a minor thing, when I should have had the courage and ability to communicate properly.
(so many of these things deeply involve communication... hmmm)
OMG, I could have written your post word for word, only I was the wife. Its eerie sometimes and comforting at the same time when you hit upon a post that echos your experiences.
I also want to add that the mistake I made was from the very beginning, because of the love I had for him, I settled for less in a relationship than I actually needed and wanted. I grew increasingly resentful that there was no changing it as well. I wanted open, honest communication, honesty, empathy, a best friend, and intimacy. I could see that he lacked these qualities, but I made excuses in my mind for that that would assure me (in my mind as well) that it was possible to improve in time. It didn't, and he became resentful that I needed what he didn't possess, and I became resentful that he couldn't come through. I should have been more honest with myself about what I was willing to accept, and not.
being frustrated was wrong
I shoud have suppressed my feelings better.
joining DS and venting my frustration was especially wrong - that ruined everything
I wish we never got started. I basically accept we were not meant to be and I miss my friend.
