Breakups & Divorce Support Group
Just broke up with someone or in the midst of a difficult divorce? Breaking up is difficult no matter what the circumstances are. They say that time heals all wounds, but sometimes a listening ear or a hug can work wonders for the heart. Whether you need a place to vent, someone to hold you to No Contact, or need advice about what to do, we're here to help.

To start, I want to point out that I was never in a real relationship with this person. We started out as a friends with benefits, my first and last, and started to hang out a lot. We ended up talking everyday, hooking up, and going on dates for about a year. I mentioned wanting to be exclusive several times, but he told me he didn't think he could handle a relationship with his mental health the way it is. I knew he was hooking up with other people, but I accepted this was as far as we would ever get.
In December of last year, a girl was added to a groupchat made by our mutual friend. She messaged me separately when she discovered that he and I knew each other, telling me that they've been talking for two weeks. I asked him about it, before I realized she meant romantically, and he told me they met on tinder. At this point, she started asking me about him as a person, telling me how she really liked him and that he seemed like a really great guy. I didn't know what to tell her, because I didn't want to be the mean girl who gets all jealous even when I have no right to be, so I tried to say relatively positive things about him. It was incredibly painful, and afterwards I told him I couldn't handle continuing our relationship the way it was. Knowing he was seeing other people was one thing, but to actually meet her was all too real.
He cut off his relationship with the girl, which I was only certian of when she texted me after asking if he and I were in a relationship, but still said he couldn't handle more. He just kept telling me that I was the most important person in his life. It was so painful to hear, but I told him we could only be friends at this point. Later that week, we met in person. He told me that he couldn't handle being friends because he loved me, so he wanted us to stop talking for a while. He then told me that he hoped to get his mental health in order over the next semester, and then hopefully we could begin again in the Summer. We've spoken a few times since then, mostly resulting from drunk texts, and I can't seem to get over him.
About a month after we stopped seeing each other, a started dating someone else. I know it looks like a rebound, but we've been dating for 4 months, and I care about him deeply. I did not intend to jump into a new relationship, but I am happy with him. I am, however, not sure if I'm over my ex, and I really don't want to hurt the guy I'm with. He's incredibly sweet and giving, and I love spending time with him, but I wonder if the timing is just too difficult. I just feel stupid giving up something that is so good because of lingering feelings for someone who I have no future with.
I would really love some advice as to what would be fair to my boyfriend. Should I keep trying to put my ex out of my head while in this relationship? Or should I end things to focus more deeply on moving forward? Or should I ask to take a break? In theory, that feels like the best option, but I feel like when people take a break it might as well be a breakup.

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...

I'm horrified! I knew my insurance would go up due to getting a new car but I didn't expect it to go up over $2,000. I did have an accident with the snow/ice in the winter. I was just telling my brother that I have had my car since March 2, 2026 and have only spent $75 on an oil change. Now this! I called another insurance company and their quote was over $4,000. I guess I have to pay...
With the new guy You need ask yourself are you with him because you want to be or is it you don’t want to be alone? I think you should take a break and work on yourself .
Your ex sounds like he wanted his cake and eat it to. I think all he’s looking for is sex,
If FWB guy came back today, and said he got help for his mental health, and that he loves you and wants you back and only you....
Would you immediately dump the current boyfriend and go back to the FWB guy?
It sounds like you would.
The current boyfriend may be nice and all, but he's just "meh" (so-so), but FWB guy is more exciting and fun and unpredictable... a bad boy type. That is who you like more.
While I don't think FWB guy sounds that great for anything long term (sounds like a cheater and liar already), it does seem you are more into him than your current boyfriend.
You're young, only 19 years old, probably best not to get into ANY serious relationship at your age. Fine to date guys, but take your time in finding a better guy for a real relationship. I really don't think either of these two guys is the right guy for you, in my opinion.
Have fun, enjoy your life, date different guys.... you have many many years before even worrying about finding a long term boyfriend. These are the best years of your life (trust me!) so just go have fun and don't fret over this guy or that guy. Plenty of time later on to have any serious relationships.
Thank you for sharing your heart, it is not always so easy to do. It sounds as though this individual did not have respect for you or your feelings. May he doesn't for other ladies either or even for himself. Quite often when we lack respect for ourselves we treat others in the same fashion. Either way, I'm sorry you were treated this way.
When we experience a loss in a relationship, it is recommended to take time to heal before stepping into a similar situation. When we jump in to quickly our emotions are still leading the way and decisions made with emotions do not typically result in the best outcomes. If you are still convincing yourself you are over this other man, it is likely you are still working through emotions. You may benefit by asking yourself, "What is the wise thing to do?"
You stated in your post that the relationship started as friends with benefits. When we give this most intimate part of ourselves away, outside of marriage, the emotional risk is so high and it is something we can never get back. My hope is we can encourage one another to keep this special intimacy for marriage, as it was designed.
It would be great to hear back from you and see how you are doing with this relationship and with life. Praying for you. God bless.
