All depends on the degree.......

If one person is maxing out credit cards and won't stop spending, then there's No Way to protect yourself and stay married.

You Could stay living together though......

I know older people who divorce to protect assets, even tho they still love each other and have no intention of splitting up...If they find out one partner has a disease that will bankrupt the family, they put all the assets in the other partners name and divorce.

@ patti - they can't remain living together if one person is too bitter, spiteful, and nasty to 'let it go' enough to stay living together....

It depends on the circumstances and how badly the finances are mismanaged.

For me, it was a symptom of an already abusive relationship.

I could have given up everything and started with the basics in life...food, shelter...etc...Not her, though...I have always felt that if two people truly love each other, then they would let NOTHING stand in the way of their relationship.
My life is like a complicated onion right now...just peeling away layers and realizing that there were and are so many issues going on...

I don't think it is.

We used to share all our finances, but when it got to a point where I couldn't trust my ex to use our resources wisely I put my paycheck into a separate account and didn't give her access. This way I was sure the bills were paid and there was food in the cupboard.

rman, I'm sorry. Is that why she wants a divorce? For financial reasons? It's like you said... if two people really love each other, financial matters shouldn't interfere, which is what makes you wonder if something else was going on in her mind.

Financial issues were just part of the problem. Sure, money could have solved some problems, but it was not everything. Sometimes you keep waiting and hoping that things will change. Unfortunately, sometimes they never do...Life often moves faster than the ability to make changes...then, it's too late...

If that is her reasoning, then yes, it is the right decision for you not her to get a divorce.... you don't need her or to be her sugar daddy, she married for richer or poorer, or did she sleep through that part?

Mine let finances get in the way, and still is, she is on to number 3 sugar daddy to sponge off of.... all in the span of a year and a half.
