Breakups & Divorce Support Group
Just broke up with someone or in the midst of a difficult divorce? Breaking up is difficult no matter what the circumstances are. They say that time heals all wounds, but sometimes a listening ear or a hug can work wonders for the heart. Whether you need a place to vent, someone to hold you to No Contact, or need advice about what to do, we're here to help.
I have read where you should not give any choice & force the child to stay with the other parent, that they will adjust eventually. My parents divorced while I was young and this was the method they used. I will tell you, I have very vivid memories of that time of my life. I don't want my child to ever go through what I did.
Personally, I talk to my daughter often to explain to her that I'm always just a phone call away. I tell her she can call me at bedtime so I can "tuck her in", read her a story. Last weekend when she was begging to come home, I said "how about I take you to lunch? After lunch you can decide if you want to try to spend one more night with dad." That's exactly what we did and she did go back and stay with him again the 2nd night. I think it helps put her mind at ease, that I'm still there and accessible to her. Yes it does interrupt what is supposed to be the ex's time, but I feel it's only going to be for the short term. Eventually, the calls & random meetings will not be needed anymore.
It is a transition and it takes everyone time to adjust, but I personally feel it's important for children to have at least a minimal sense of control in an uncontrollable situation. Especially when their world has been turned inside out.
Like serenity said if you want to work on things for the TWO of you that is different but getting back together solely for the kids is never a good idea.
Remember this is really brand new and the whole family unit is going to be distraught and emotional.
I hope this helps a little....hugs to you!
I wanted to punch her in the throat.
It drove me absolutely bonkers. I wanted to scream "WELL, WTF DID YOU THINK WOULD HAPPEN!???"
We always make a point of having a goodnight phone call (frequently FaceTime), and we let the kids call the other one of us whenever they want - regardless of the time. So, for example, my wife has called me at all hours of the night so that my youngest daughter can tell me she misses me. I talk to her, and reassure her, tell her I love her, and tell her that I will see her tomorrow (or whenever). Eventually she goes back to sleep, and so do I.
