The elders loved me but some of the younger ones...barred for life and always trying to drag me out the door as they got drunker in their pickup trucks parked out front...really had a hate on me and my long dark hair and honkytonk ways...had to get me a local girlfriend just so some of them would leave me alone about their women.
It was getting close to the end of the summer and things were settling down when I was invited...for the umpteenth time...over to the rez for a feast and funfest. I finally accepted.
When I first landed the job I was so paranoid of them coming through my window from the general store's roof next door...but it was so damned hot I would leave the windows open anyway...so I was still a bit freaked about going over but was assured I would be fine as it was discussed and I was invited whether some of them liked me or not.
Food was great...booze was plentiful and I had a great time as far as I can remember until it got dark. Some of the guys took me house to house...more drinking...gave up my Black Sabbath "we sold our soul for rock and roll" T-Shirt...lost my shoes...and my mind and it's bearings.
Wandered around howling at the moon and cut my feet up pretty bad and a young guy took me to his home where his mother bandaged me up and they gave me a cot to sleep it off on in the basement.
Come 'round the midnight hour I was up and on the stagger again looking for more fun times...ended up having a bottle of whiskey handed to me and spun around and off a porch. Turns out I wandered into a house with no one home and found a bed and went to sleep...passed out.
I remember being woken with someone screeching at me and beating me with something long and heavy telling me to get out of her house. I just said this is my house and rolled over and went back to sleep...passed out.
Not sure how long after I got pulled off the bed and drug into another room where I was beaten unconscious. I woke up in the back lot of the hotel the next morning with a hudson bay blanket wrapped around me...no clothes...no shoes...barely able to stand...feeling like I got trampled by a heard of buffalo.
I managed to get upstairs and crashed a while longer...had evening shift that night. I woke up around 4pm and went to shower. I was a little more clear headed by then but as I was checking all my bruises, cuts, bumps...nothing broken...but couldn't see out of one eye because it was just a bloody goose egg.
I was trying to figure out who beat me up...I remember I was somewhere where I shouldn't have been and I remembered some weird witchy cackling and laughing before I was beat into unconsciousness...I looked down and noticed I had no hair...down there...weird...really weird.
Anyway, the owner said I was in no shape to work and just sat me down and put a bottle of rum on the table for my pain. I said hello to some of the regulars and some asked if I had a good time...I said I did so...don't I look it? Everything seemed ok so I began to relax and get drunk again.
I knew there was some joking going on about me and I eyeballed this old old man whose shit I had to clean up many a time as it ran down his legs onto the floor...did I mention this was a one hotel town?...we were good friends but when I asked him he just wagged his long crooked finger at me and pointed to who I knew was his sister.
I staggered over to her table and saw the exchange of looks between her and another woman...both in their 70's...easily. I smiled and they both smiled and I said ok...so tell me...did I do something real bad?
Sister to old man laughed then got real serious and said..."you were somewhere you shouldn't have been...you did not leave...we were drunk too but not as drunk as you. We could have done anything we wanted to you but we decided you are a good man...for a honky.
Turns out Sister and her friend went to another house close by and spoke with two more of their friends. They decided they would put a beating on me...without hurting me too much.
Four old women, in their 70's to 80's had beat the crap out of me...taken all their frustrations with the men in their lives and let it out...they had fun. It was funny...Sister asked if I wanted my pubic hair back..."winters coming...wind blows could here."
Worst beating I ever took from anyone in my life...only going through a windshield and bouncing off the back of a spreader truck...in a whiteout on the road out of Banff ever did more damage.
I let them keep the hair...and the clothes and shoes and got outta town a month later...before snowfall. No harm...no foul...glad to be alive...I've done stupider.
