You need to talk with your pdoc about this. I've been on meds since 88'. I actually do this. Now, I never did this until I had been in treatment for a long time. If you do this, you need to make sure you get your pdoc on board with it. I do it now and my pdoc knows it. I tend to get over-medicated at times, when I fall into this state, I back off by 1 300 mg. lithium cap. Unless I start into a manic or depressive state I don't add it back. If I start getting severly depressed, I add it back immediately. In either case, by decreasing only 1 cap, I still stay on my meds and can take less medication for a little while. Bipolars go thru periods of normalcy. Some BP's actually quit meds altogether and get off them entirely. They will live normal happy lives, because they are in this state. The problem lies when we start into an episode. Without medication, the next episode will be worse. I think its better to back off by a small amount rather than stopping meds completely. This is simply my personal opinion from being a 20 yr. BP , that rapid cycles. Again, I want to stress to you the importance of talking with you pdoc about this. I think it is also important that the person who lives with you be aware and on board with you during this time. They can help you to judge any behavior which may indicate you need to add back the med you decreased. I forgot to mention, because you stay on meds, and the medication is still in your system, it doesn't take 2 weeks to feel the effects, increasing will be almost instant. -
