Is bipolar disorder genetic?

For sure it runs in families, but the nurture/nature debate was still raging the last time I looked. Still no physical proofs available, one way or the other. If physical proof has been identified, I would love to read the research papers/links.

Been a while since I looked. Maybe it's time to look again.

In my culture (or maybe the way I was raised), mental illness is completely taboo to talk about. It's only in talking to my cousin's that I realize it's a family thing. Out of 20+ cousins, 6 of us have confirmed (diagnosed) mental illness. No previous generation will talk about it, but I can see the behaviors. I read a lot and totally believe that there is a genetic component.

There are several studies like this that point to a genetic component - but it's more a predisposition than it means that you will have bipolar disorder as I understand it.

I have found via my family tree that my 2nd great grandfather (great great grandfather) was not allowed into this country due to insanity and I know my dad has bipolar disorder so I was able to see how far down the line that this runs in our family.

    I did the dumbest thing today.  I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds.  I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym.  What a dummy!
