So this is for folks in the US, but the way things have been going with rising health care costs it's hard to know what kind of help you're eligible for and where to go to get extra help. I was having a really hard time at the end of the year paying for rxs and while I'm on disability I'm not eligible for SSI or medicaid help - or so I thought! A very kind and knowledgeable case worker told me that since I'd rec'd SSI many years ago, and was made ineligible because COLA bumped me above the income limit I was eligible for the Pickle Program - what the heck!
So, in 1977 Senator Pickle (poor man, what an unfortunate name) realised that the income cap for SSI would make people receiving both SSI and SSDI ineligible for Medicaid if the cost of living adjustments were applied. He added an amendment to medicaid eligibility that if you *ever* rec'd SSI and the cost of living adjustment pushed you over the income cap you would still be eligible for medicaid. There's some fine print (there's always fine print), but if you had SSI and don't currently and can't afford your meds call your state Medicaid office to see if you're eligible for the Pickle Program in your state.
If you are on SSDI and receive Medicare see if your qualify for the low-income subsidy or Extra Help. You may be able to lower your premiums and co-pays for your medications.
