It's hard to tell. When I was a state employee I could file an FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) sheet out. it doesn't say what the disability is and you don't have to tell them. My supervisor just new that I was allowed to take time off. FMLA isn't perfect but it holds your job for at least a little while during treatment.

I don’t talk about my disability at all at work. But I have had to take leave for a week at a time a couple times and they have been very accommodating and respectful and I provided a Doctor’s note. I told the manager once that I had a disability but I didn’t say what it was and I never talk about my issues.i have committed to doing as best I can and professional. My boss knows that I have something but I just don’t talk about it.

All I ever told my emplloyer was that I have a chronic illness that requires me to take leave at times and that I work with a good team of clinicians who help me stay well

Thanks, folks. I'm in a different circumstance in that I am an hourly contractor. The contractor bit is only a paper company for taxes (and tax deductions), but the company sees me as an employee and was told to act as if I was. I can take time, and just don't get paid but I wonder about losing my job but I think that I can little to stand on.

The only thing I've told my employer is that I"m on SSDI and need certain hours a month and can't work over those hours. A couple months a year I have to take off a week when there is a 3 payday month because I would make over the allowed amount by SSDI. I've never told them what I'm on disability for. I think, by law, they have to accommodate you, but you don't have to reveal your disability.

How long have you worked for this company, Thor? I personally would not volunteer the information, but do you feel you have earned enough credibility to have that stand for itself, even if they find out about your illness?

I am a retired military officer and the consulting job is what I did when I was in the Service. I was recruited into the job by my current boss who was my boss back in 2004-2007. So there is a fair amount of trust, but again this is business. I will probably tell them that I have a chronic health problem that might require some time off. Like last week for four days when I was locked up in the nuthouse. My mania is not pretty and I often go psychotic at the end.

NO NO NO! I work for the largest corporate pharmaceutical company in the US. Do not fall for this ploy. If you need to take time off go through HR FMLA they are legally obligated to keep their mouths shut and cannot relay the message to your boss. You DO have to tell HR the illness. They need details. So HR will know you have BP All they can tell your boss is that they have medical documentation that prevents you from doing your job duties no other details are given to your boss. Now FMLA you can use for STD (Short Term Disability) or intermittent, LTD (Long Term Disability) OR you can reach out to HR special accommodations to ask for accommodations which is separate from FMLA. Be prepared to have medical documentation filled out. You will need the forms from HR accommodations or FMLA leave team. Telling your boss can be fetal to your job. Bosses may not be descrete even though their supposed to. They may tell another manager a friend on the same team. This brings BP paranoia and loss of reputation due to rumorville. Trust me the employee handbook is a legal spiel to cover their butts. DO NOT FALL for this baloney. I'm telling from experience. I've worked corporate for a long time. Trust me do not say a word. Call HR Monday. Print off HR accommodations forms or FMLA. Determine when your next ETC is and determine if you want intermittent leave, STD, LTD, or just accommodationsm Now with FMLA your job should give you roughly 60% of your normal check. However, getting paid leave is not always a guarantee.
