Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
Once, I was in a group therapy thingy through my therapist's office. The "main" therapist ran the group. I had an issue, and I called MY therapist about it, and it was confidential.
The "main" therapist, who is supposed to be the god of the practice, told me that I had to tell the whole group about it, and went and told them what happened when I refused.
I told her that she had just breached confidentiality, which is litigatible in her profession. Her take was that, since she is in practice with my therapist, she had every right to know, and he told her about it. I told her that was inappropriate, but I could live with that. But for her to tell the group about something confidential that I discussed with my therapist individually was completely inappropriate, against the APA, and that, if she ever did that again, I would report her and sue her. She got really mad at me.
About thirty minutes later, after yelling at me in therapy, I got up and left. I called my therapist and told him what he did was wrong, and what she did was wrong. He agreed with me, and told me that the main therapist had asked to speak with me.
I went in to talk to her, and she apologized to me, but would not admit that what she did was breach confidentiality. I told her that, since she committed the worst rule of therapy, I would never trust her again, I could not forgive her, and I wanted nothing to do with her, which was the truth.
I walked out of group and never went back. I was shocked how she could not see that was a breach of confidentiality. I should have sued her fucking ass.
From what I'm seeing with this post, bipolarprincess, I'm relating to what a few others have said regarding anger issues.
When I was manic, I was always angry and took it out on the people and situations that were available to help me.
I didn't see it like that at the time and did what you did. I called every supervisor, human rights etc. It really got me nothing but more anger.
I did this for the first few times I was hospitalized and then realized that group was not going to work for me until I was more stable...I'm not even sure if it was my decision as my memory of manic times is poor.
Anyhow to make a long story a bit shorter, I had a lot of success with group once my mania started to subside and I could deal with feelings instead of issues.
I hope this helps and not offends.
Once again, trapped emotionally into an old message's grip. I am tired of it.
"Cheap sunglasses..."
Look on the positive side of it - This is your special relaxation music that works for you and why the hell share it with others. Keep it as special for you, because you are special.
If you feel you cannot attend that group therapy again, then find one you can. It is important that we have these outlets to help us.
All the best and I will look forward to hearing more from you.
Cheers Sandy
