from my experience, i will never tell coworkers about BP. In one job I said I had depression and I got all this patronizing advice. They meant well but still. And coworkers are often huge gossips. I don't recommend it unless you want nonstop BS on the job.

I agree with most of the other people on this post. Don't tell. There is a stigma with any mental illness, especially bipolar. My boss found out about my bipolar and found an excuse to fire me soon after.

I dont advertise, but my whole workgroup knows. And I am not shy about it. But I have a few things going for me.

1) I work in healthcare.

2) A lot of people I work with know somebody who has a mental health issue, or themselves take a med for something.

3) I am highly productive so no one else really cares.

4) I keep what I tell management to a minimum. I have a standing FMLA on file that I have recertified every 6 mo. This also fulfills the ADA requirement of full disclosure. As long as I can do my job they cant say shit about my attendance

I agree with Karl; medical environments tend to be more open & knowledgable about it. Other types of workplaces could be more difficult

I to work in health care as a cna and thiers 2 people that know i have BP im afraid to tell my boss because i dont know what the out come will be so what do i do to protect me just in case because i have already used up my sick time for 2008 and i have my days where i cant work. but i cant lose my job i love my job what do i do??????????

too many bad experiences.....I never tell anymore, especially co-workers. If I get close to someone, ill bring it up and hope for the best.

I miss way too much work to not tell them because I had to get on FMLA. Even before that I told my boss and a few coworkers. I don't know if they gossip about it or not. One of my "friends" teases me about my meds which quite annoys me.

before i resigned and began recieving ssdi, i didnt have my diagnosis of bipolar yet, i had a diff. diagnosis. during which my boss continued to tell me that i had bipolar. its weird that she knew before my dr at that time "knew".

The people I work w/ do not know i have BP. I am a teacher and work in a large school... i just don't need my business getting to parents and the students. I chose not to tell anyone i work w/.

I would not disclose unless I got really sick. There are no safety or financial risks in my work so I don't feel I have too.

I am self employed, however most of my clients, management, etc are told that I am bipolar. Once they are told they sort of become part of my support structure. It also helps them explain some of the things i say, do, and think sometimes. It also explains why I have to have a structured life, and sometimes why I have to walk away, or take time off. In the past when I worked for others it was a slight problem with some folks. But then again some folks have a problem with everything and everybody.
