Another Term to replace Depression

Depression is such a misleading term to describe this illness. No one gets it because everyone gets depressed and gets over it. They compare it to the blues.

A more clinical name for this illness is needed to convey the fact that it is a distinct medical condition which can be fatal.

Brain Chemical Dysfunction might be more accurate. What would you call it?

Well, mania is also a brain chemical dysfunction, isn't it? I don't see that we need a new term for depression. Everybody understands it and the varying degrees of seriousness. Of course you should do as you wish.

This illness isn't just depression. Your right there are varying degrees and causes of depression. Like losing a job, a divorce, making a big change. Everybody has varying degrees. Then there are the people who pathologically grieve for losses instead of moving on..and that is an even different type of depression. Postpartum depression is another.

I like the word bipolar depression-because we know it is a mood disorder-part of a mood swing.

It's called Unipolar Affective Disorder however it's never really caught on like Bipolar has

Some of us do not use any big words like Depression we just call it Sleepy time =) Or in New York I think they call it "Leave me the F' alone " Here in Michigan we call it Winter. I think the politically correct term should be something like Enjoyment Detachment Syndrome.

Ahhh heck lets just call it what it is "Bummed out"

I agree Amuseme. It's the wrong term. I've had people tell me they have suffered from depression and (this is true) one guy said he had a piece of chocolate cake and he felt better!! Depression is definitely a misnomer.
I usually say I'm feeling suicidal. Harsh, yes, but they get the point.

    Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.
