Bedwetting Support Group
Bedwetting (or nocturnal enuresis or sleepwetting) is involuntary urination while asleep. It is the normal state of affairs in infancy, but can be a source of embarrassment when it persists into school age or the teen or adult years. Find others who are coping with a bedwetting problem and share your experiences and questions.
Good luck to you, I hope you are able to have some dry nights sometime soon too! :)
Bedwetting alarms do work for some people. They are not a miracle cure and do not promise instant results for everyone. A complete cure in 6 weeks, while not unheard of, would be quite unusually fast.
Would you care to tell us more about how you came to try this particular alarm, what your experience with it was like, etc.? If not, then if you want to advertise on this board, I suggest you start paying the nominal fee for a place on the right hand side of the page like everyone else, instead of mooching from the support board. Thank you. :)
I hope you don't lose too much sleep over whether his sheets are wet during the night. If they are and it bothers him, he is old enough that he can either help with the clean-up himself or let you know about it. One good "trick" (not sure if you would have seen it mentioned here or not) is to make the bed in two full layers with a waterproof sheet in between. That way if he wakes up and the bed is wet, he can just tear off the top layer (everything down to the first waterproof sheet), change and have a ready-made dry bed to crawl back into, and then deal with the mess in the morning. At 13, he definitely doesn't need your help to strip the bed or put dry clothes on himself if he wakes up during the night, and he may actually begin to prefer the privacy of doing it by himself. For a change of wet clothes in the middle of the night, wiping his private area with a damp washcloth is good enough so that he's not bringing traces of urine with him into his clean pj's or bedsheets when he goes back to bed afterwards.
If the bed is wet but doesn't wake him up, there's no harm there either - that was how I was for years and I never had a rash or any other problems; just make sure he takes a shower or rinses off in the bathtub in the morning so he is completely clean before he gets dressed for the day. If anything, being in a bed with wet sheets that is open to the air is less likely to cause a rash than wearing something that will hold the urine concentrated close to his body for a long period of time (especially plastic pants or plastic-lined diapers - they don't call it "diaper rash" for nothing!).
Good luck to both of you, and I hope he is able to start outgrowing this soon! In the meantime, please feel free to contact me or post more here if you have any other questions or concerns.
I prefer a mattress protector over diapers myself. Spent most of my life sleeping on one (I suffer from Primary Enuresis). However, my wife can't stand the feeling of plastic under the bedding so I've switched to diapers.
I find that a vinyl sheet provides more protection to my mattress as I still haven't found a diaper that doesn't leak at least some of the time.
Cheers!
Your wife may still be more comfortable with you wearing protection, and that's certainly a valid concern, but mattress protectors have improved a lot since we were kids, at least!
Good luck and God Bless!
Also, I found the alarms and waterproof mattress pads and washable waterproof underwear at this webstore:
