Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Support Group
Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
Years ago I was diagnosed with A-fib. It happened after binge drinking daily for quite a long time and I think upset my electolytes in my body. I was given metoprolol at the time and I returned to feeling good. I started exercising and eventually got my doctor to allow me to stop the meds. I did good.
Then about 9 years later, I had a bout with cellulitus and my body temperature went up to 105. I was very sick. Was checked into a hospital and the doctors eventually found the problem and that's when I got my diagnosis of A-fib. I can't remember what they gave me but I know I was on a asprin regement and other blood pressure meds hctz and lisinopril.
The next year or so I was referred to a heart doctor. He asked me a few questions and put me on sotolol. Hated it because I was always sleepy and I gained some weight. I was eventually taken off that and put on flecinide with Diltiazem. Didn't like that because I had bad fluid build up in my legs and the swelling made my calfs and ankles huge. Plus, the diltiazem made me weak. My legs lost strength big time and my upper body strength went to hell too. after another evaluation, my doctor put me on testosterone replacement(andro gel) and they thought I was suffering from lack of this male hormone. Wrong...I am the one who concluded that the diltazem was the cause of me losing my muscle strength.
So, the doctor put me back on metoprolol. I like it and it seems to work. The problem I have with it is I can't seem to lose weight now and am gaining in fact. Damn it. What can I do? This med seems to have caused problems with my glugose levels or wrecked my normal metabolism responses and the weight gain is the result. I hate this.
It makes me mad when I looked up side effects and some experts on WebMD said "why yes, some people will gain. I know of one person who gained 4 pounds". FOUR POUNDS?
So then I read the forums. Actual users have reported gains of 20,30 and 40 pounds! Gawd this makes me sick on how the doctors go along with the product literature/sales pitch and make these silly and dangerous claims of the innocence.
I think I have gained nearly 70 lbs since 2013 when they started giving me these meds. I don't know what to do anymore aside from near total starvation. I am sick of this crap. I am frustrated to no end. I've requested ablation but the doctor says we must exhaust all other options first. Maybe she wants me to cash in my chips. Yeah, sad thing to say but I don't feel like I am being properly taken care of.
What should I do?
I don't know. Sometimes I think they are just satisfying their own goals and don't really give a damn about my health since they ignore my weight gain. Any A-fib meds that won't mess with your weight?

Usually I get a daily influx of emails on health topics. An article from Dr. Mercola really stood out recently though because it mentioned that fat cells have their own mitochondria. Not only was this the first I'd heard of this, he also mentioned that fat serves a purpose in our metabolism. Another new factoid for me. The bottom line for me was to appreciate that even our fat cells play a...

I just do not feel well and I really think that it's because I cried yesterday on my way to work about my Aunt who is in the hospital. I don't think that we will have her much longer. She is very frail. Now she needs help eating. So, this is the third time in a year that I felt this way after crying. I think crying releases toxins into my body. I also worked up a sweat at the gym...

When looking to get off a prescription for charley horses, I came across a book by Carolyn Dean, MD and began taking magnesium. I was able to stop the prescription and never had to take it again. http://drcarolyndean.com/2015/04/atrial-fibrillation-the-magnesium-option/ Of course, I also found research and experience reported by Dr. Russell Blaylock, MD (neurologist), Mark Hyman, MD, Joseph Mercola, MD. Actually, wrote a presentation on the stuff at one point.
Hopefully you will get some helpful suggestions here. And in addition to seeing someone who also is a naturopath, getting more medical opinions is usually a good idea. Best of luck to you!
"Magnesium". Is magnesium oxide the same or good to use? (I will read the article)...
There is no doubt this med is hard on my metabolism.
