Yes! When I was first diagnosed, I too was given Metoprolol, I sat around doing nothing ( I had just retired a month before). I was miserable! I still got episodes.

I got a second opinion, and changed to using it for PIP....taking one only when I get an episode.

This has been working for me, most of the time, for 3 years.

Metoprolol is definitely NOT my friend but it is no longer my enemy. The only problems I have with fatigue is from the nightmares the beta blockers give me that steal my sleep. (The diarrhea ceased after about 4 to 6 weeks). They have, however slowed down my heart rate to acceptable. Its a tradeoff.

ATP brings up an important point. It successfully slows her heart rate. That is what it is for.

I have Bradycardia, so to slow my HR down 24/7 was crazy. My Dr. wanted me to get a Pace Maker so I could tolerate it. That is when I got a 2nd opinion, and new Dr.

Thank you folks for your answers. My resting heart rate has definitely slowed on the metoprolol--from the 80s down to the 60s. That is the good part, but I don't want to spend the rest of my days in a "fog." I realized that my first prescription was for the "succinate" version of the med, and then it was changed to the "tartrate" version. The first version didn't bother me as much, and my heart rate was still lower. I think the tartrate version is time-released, and that's the one that bums me out. I plan to ask to go back to the first prescription to see if that helps. Thanks again!

I have taken metoprolol for about 7 years now. It did make me feel fatigued, especially when I first started it. I was eventually started on flecainide and the metoprolol dose was dropped to 50 mg daily and I feel better at that dose. I took up to 200mg at one point.
The succinate is the XL time release and I only take it once a day. The tartrate should be taken twice a day.

Yes, I have to use a very small dose. I use it for palpitations when I get them. I use it as PIP.

When I was first diagnosed I was given Metoprolol. I too felt like I was in a "fog" and was extremely sleepy and out of it. Asked my Dr to switch me to something else ...eventually settled on Bystolic which was much, much better for me personally. Everyone reacts differently to these drugs so work with your Dr to find what is right for you!

I take 200mg of metoprolol per day and haven't ever noticed any feelings of fatigue from it. It keeps my BP right where it should be and my resting HR is between 50 - 60. But then I'm relatively young too (37). Everyone is different I guess!

Yes makes me tired and I have no drive. Can make one feel a bit depressed as well.

I'm trying to study for my nurse practitioner boards and I have one heck of a time... I have no focus and an almost " I dont care attitude". Of course the AF isn't helping either.

I got in for my EP consult this Thursday morning. I want this AF done with! As we all do.

My doc put me back on the succinate, 25 mg, one pill per day. The succinate (I learned) is the time released one, so it works more slowly and doesn't take me out of it all at once. I could barely drive while I was taking the tartrate. At least now I feel like I can function with the succinate.

Yes, I had extreme fatigue on metoprolol. It made me feel as if I had a constant hangover (headache, nausea). It also compromised my judgment when driving, and I had a small accident; lucky it was small. I told this to my cardiologist and he took me off the drug. He then prescribed bistolic (sp?), (as a pip) as I have occasional paf. That medication was a somewhat better choice but also made me feel crappy. I was told none of these types of drugs will prevent afib from occurring. I now see an EP at the Cleveland Clinic, and he does not want me on any heart-type medication (I do not have any heart disease). I occasionally take Xanax, however, for stress, which for me is the greatest (apparently) afib inducer. This drug, in the tiniest amount, eliminates the clusters of pac's I experience from time-to-time, and also slows my heart rate but with no side effects. I also am learning stress management. At this point I feel, the causes of afib being many, one must research all possible angles of their own personal experience to seek the best action to take in treatment. This group has been a very good resource for me, and I appreciate so much all the very helpful discussion here.

I have been driving for over 40 years, and have been lucky enough NEVER to have had an accident..then, on the metoprolol, that streak ended. Pulling into a parking space, and scraped up against another car...no damage to the Town Car, but $2500 to the other car, and I don't think I was going faster than 2 MPH. One of the many joys of driving on drugs, I guess...I HATED being on metoprolol and flecanide, I must say. Yet another pro for ablation!

The transmission on the Town Car blew at 165,000 miles, so now I drive one of those teensy weensy Caddy's. I don't think it would even knock you over if I hit you. Unlike the good old days, when a Caddy took up the entire block!

Yes it does. At first I was on 50mg and it made ne real tired for about a month. Then I was put on 100mg. That made me even more tired. But ur body gets use to it. Since I started working out I dropped to 50mg vecause the 100mg was making me feel like crap. I am also on the extended release version. It will eventually get better for u.
