1. Recognize that comments and criticism are part of your work. If 50% of the comments are on target and 50% misplaced, that means if you benefit from the good ones, you will do a better job.
2. Don't look at drastic solutions. If you get criticized, don't think of leaving the project or someone getting rid of you, instead, just work on the narrow issue they mentioned.
At almost the last minute, someone came up with a change that would make my job a lot harder and more complicated. I was initially angry, voiced a complaint to someone, but basically went along with the change. Guess what, the guy was absolutely right and dramatically improved the presentation with what he did, and his superior knowledge. Several people complimented me on the presentation (basically giving me credit for what he did).
3. Try to limit negative self-talk So work to get over the negative feelings and talk.
4. Success and Feedback I have a family member who was I think the youngest director of the Fortune 500 company where he works, and is now buying a million dollar home.
He's reasonably smart but not exceptional (good but no great standardized tests, decent but not great school grades). What he does very, very well, is to solicit and utilize criticism. Before an interview for a new position or making a presentation, he requests feedback, indeed criticism. And people do criticize, sometimes unfairly, but he doesn't take it to heart. If there are 20 criticisms, say one fourth on target, he takes and uses what's on point.
