breathing exercises help a little to as soon as I start having trouble breathing I start but it doesn't help all the time.sorry.
maybe like Mgin said try to find what triggered it an deal with that.

What helps me, though, is getting my heart rate up. Walking, jogging, exercise, music, and tuning out the world. Good luck!!!

I relax in front of the mirror. It helps me to be "mindfulness" in the moment, and the breathing is easier to work with. Getting the shoulders to relax, the face to relax, and the chest to relax, gets rid of one of the major causes for what you are describing, shoulder breathing. This is often one of the panic attack descriptions, and can be switched off once you get the visuals to match up in your brain and body thought pattern.
