Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
Hello,
I am new to this group and wanted to say "hi." After being diagnosed with anxiety disorder years ago I have come to realize living with an anxious brain has definately been a big part of making poor decisions. Sometimes it's difficult to tell if the anxiety I expereince causes me to make wrong choices or if the wrong choices trigger anxiety attacks. Either way, I am trying to live more in the moment but plan for a better future. Currently, I am in school, working part-time and living with a man who is also very anxious at times. The hardest thing for me is moving through my fear. There are times when my anxiety keeps me grounded and paralyzed but my boyfriend usually misinterprets that as laziness and he's not shy about berating me about it! I defend myself and ask him why he says those things but it's trying to say the least. I try to focus on what I can do and not what else is going on with him and his own personal negativity. Ugh. What do other people on here do to overcome those difficult, anxiety-triggering moments? It must be different for everyone but then again there must be some common threads.
Thank you for reading.

My emotions have been bottled up all week and I haven't felt good as a result. My Aunt passed away on Monday morning. I saw her on Sunday. I knew it wouldn't be long. I called the nursing home on Monday morning to tell them to get a message to her but I was told that they had already called the funeral home. I asked if she passed away and the nurse said yes, I thought you knew. I...

I consider my therapy support network to be my most important tool in managing my own anxiety. Anxiety is a sneaky disorder that can wiggle its way into just about any nook and cranny in my life, in endlessly creative ways. My peer therapy supporters help me keep up with the new torments and find ways to deal as the need arises.
DS is part of that therapy support network. Hope it works as well for you as it has for me. Welcome aboard.
Our thoughts are the main driving force behind our anxiety. Usually, when I feel my anxiety flare, I condition my parasympathetic system by taking in deep breaths well enough to allow my breathing to slow down as well as my negative thoughts, During the intense moment (if I am in a place where I can), sit comfortably to myself, relax my shoulders close my eyes and block out everything but the sound and sensation of my breathing. After a while, it feels as if I had a refreshing drink of the most perfect purified water in a very calming and satisfying way. If a person is persistent about triggering me and I start to feel the chemical changes (my heart racing etc.) start to happen within my body, I tune whomever it is out until I can connect good breaths to my heart even in the midst of an argument. I meditate often and engage in self-cognitive behavioral therapy with myself. I reject negative thoughts that have potential action to upset me as well as negative toxic energy from others. Have you tried breathing exercises before?
Thank you for the supportive reply! You and arfie are on top if it here! Thank you both.
I have tried breathing exercises and use them when I can remember...even at work when it gets busy and it does help. However, you are right about the meditation. I was meditating daily for a while and it really helped calm me. The anxiety does seem to perpetuate itself unless I interrupt the cycle. Glad to know other people have an idea of what I am talking about.
Grateful.
