Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. Hi everyone,
I had undiagnosed anxiety as a child, always about medical issues that I was worried I had and then had trouble sleeping. It seemed to go away or I could keep it at bay, then recently it returned. I'm now in my early 30's, and broke up with my longterm boyfriend (8 yrs) about a year ago, moved in with family and everythings changed. I think the stress of that big change has caused my anxiety to get out of control now. I recently got a bad cold/cough, and convinced myself last night that I was suffering from some rare breathing disorder that would cause certain death, to the point where I was shaking, and having a panic attack. I've had an anxiety attack 2x, once as a child and once towards the end of my relationship, then last night. I'm scared now that when I go home tonight, am along with my thoughts, it will happen again.
I plan to see a therapist when my health insurance returns, I am overweight and I think exercising will help a lot, and plan on spending more time with family...but there's still that looming fear that feels out of my control, that I will be overwhelmed with being along with my thoughts, my mind will get the better of me and I will have a panic attack, not sleep.
Does anyone have any good coping mechanisms? I took a hot shower, drank hot tea last night, watched a funny movie, but truly the only thing that helped was talking to my sister. But she is very busy and I don't want to depend on her. I'm hoping this forum will help, if anyone who has more experience with anxiety can give me any helpful ideas, about getting ready for sleeping, relaxing, it would be so helpful.
Thank you in advance.

Exercise, even as simple as tapping toes, moving your fingers will help the anxiety deflate naturally safely.
Congratulations on knowing the impact of the changes, and you're doing great!
Best wishes!
Everyday is a new day. You've already started with some great coping skills (bath, tea, funny movies) Now is the time to start taking good care of yourself. Exercise. I had gained some weight during the end of the relationship and when he left, I took up boxing classes. Not only did it help me mentally but I lost 50lbs. last year! :) Until therapy try doing 1 nice thing for yourself everyday. Spend time with friends/family even when you don't feel like it. Cry. You won't move past this until you allow yourself to cry. It helps you let to let go. If the breakup is fresh, start slow with all of this. You will have plenty of time to learn and grow from it but you need to be very gentle with yourself right now.
And if you EVER want to chat with me, I am available. I may be at a different stage than you right now, but I have been through it all and can really relate.

Anyway, I suffered greatly. I went insane, sort of like my anxiety now, except my fear of death or heart attack.
I should have gone for help, I should have talked to someone, it took me awhile to get back on track, but even though we are still married, it may not have been till only recently I have let go, but have i truly forgiven for that hurt? I am not sure yet, and it was 15 ys ago.
If you can afford it, when you get the insurance, whatever you need to do, start talking to someone.
Only now, after months and months of my recent bout of anxiety have I started therapy.
Good Luck!
