General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...

Hi all,
I know its been a while since I posted on here but I could really use your advice and guidance. I've been laid off now for 3 months and its starting to get to me. I wake up with panic attacks. Maybe the worst thing is every day I seem to have a terrifying worry about something I have done in the past, and not just recently; I'm talking about things over the entire course of my existance! Every day is a new old worry until I cycle through them and start all over again.
Every day it seems to be different from things i said, things I should have said, things I didnt do, things I did do, being with my ex for so long and letting him use and abuse me (the relationship ended 4 years ago).
I worry that because I kept thinking I would be let go and I was that if I keep thinking about the past it will remanifest itself and I might lose what I have left.
I dont know how to stop this and its driving me nuts. I dont have benefits so I cant afford to go on anything or see anyone.
What do you guys do to stop this cycle?
thanks :)

You will have more work than you can shake a stick at. Offer a low hourly rate, and take all work. Work your butt off.
Build a clientele. You're anxious because you have no job. Get work and use that anxiety to fuel you with basically NOS. Let that anxiety push you forwards instead of inactivate you and lock you into stasis.
I've done teh cleaning thing. It's easier than you realise. Everyone wants someone who will do a good job. Do a damn fine job, work your butt off, kiss the soil. Physical labour is very good for healing and if you've not done it before, you definitely should. It's a new space to be in. :)
Stay hydrated.
Go for it! You do the best you can with what you have!
If you can even volunteer somewhere it might help. Having that regular schedule and something to do can be a real God-send.
For me, I need to always be problem solving. If I have work or a project, I'm in good shape. If I don't, I tend to worry myself to bits.
I would suggest you find a project - any project - or volunteer job - or other job and put your energy into that.
If that doesn't fit, you can just find a hobby to be passionate about - learn a new language, paint, pottery, flower arranging, cooking, yoga, meditation, running.
And when you find yourself worrying, switch over to trying to find a solution or problem solve or innovate around your new interest.
If you really need to talk with someone, there are free anxiety phone lines you can call. Or, of course we're all here! : )
Thats not the best thing to do if you have anxiety, if that is what is going on with you.
Don't worry about the worry cycles. That is just the excess adrenaline causing that. You are hyper-aware due to all that adrenaline and you are constantly scanning your own thoughts and subconsciously looking for something to be wrong with them. And you keep finding it, and you will continue to keep finding it because that is what happens when you have anxiety. In an anxious cycle, you will continue to look for something to be wrong until you find something to be wrong. The only way to stop it is to desensitize yourself and stop the adrenaline flow.
I would keep yourself distracted with calming TV shows or puzzle or music or whatever. I think staying busy is a good idea, but I am not sure that now would be the best time to start a new job. Just my opinion, but your brain hasn't even processed or healed from the last life change...I certainly wouldn't throw another one on top of that right now. I would wait a few weeks at least for all this to settle in, and then start looking for something new.
Don't analyze the worry you are going through. Just let it go, and say "ITs just my anxiety", and don't give it a second thought. Its just a bunch of junk floating around your head. The toxic by-product of anxiety. IT will slowly seep its way out of your head as you desensitize and heal up from this big change in your life. Hope your days get better soon.
