Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. 1) I used to eat late into the night, which caused heartburn, which contributed to keeping me awake. I stopped that, which helped.
2) I used to drink lots of caffeinated beverages all day, late into the evening. I all but cut caffeine out. I quit caffeinated coffee, which has made the biggest difference, and now mostly only get a bit of caffeine from the green tea I drink during AM and early afternoon hours.
3) I don't watch or read any kind of controversial content before bed. This includes most news, anything sad, depressing, horror-themed, post-apocalyptic, etc. This has helped ease my mind.
4) Exercise. I know no one likes it, and it's hard to stay motivated. But let me tell you, for the anxious mind, aerobic exercise is like a drug. I challenge you, the next time you are anxious and worried that you won't be able to sleep one night, go out and run 6 miles. It has a way of clearing the mind. Then tell me when your aching exhausted body lays down that night that you won't fall sleep. Works for me.
These four things, along with a consistent nighttime routine, have made a HUGE difference in quality and length of sleep. I was one who wouldn't believe or accept for the longest time that these things could impact sleep in a significant way. Well I am here to tell you that they can. They also impact the anxious mind in a significant way.
