Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
Recently, I had an appointment with my Psychologist. It went well and I did end up crying but out of relief. I did have a history of suicidal thoughts but recently they have been going away. I was offered medication for my anxiety but refused. I know that kind of sounds dumb but I was kinda scared in case the side effects had any severe impact on me. Anyways, usually every appointment my psychologist offers it even though I have told her no multiple times. And a week after this appointment which went well. She called my mother saying I needed to go to the E.R because she thought I was going to kill myself. I think she is trying to get me on medication which I really don't want and I feel like I should switch or confront her I'm not sure. And sidenote, every appointment she asks me if I have any suicidal or harmful thoughts. And in that appointment, I said No for both. I really think I should confront her but I'm not so sure. I just need advice on this kind of situation thanks.

Choosing to accept medication therapy can be intimidating. A lot of those meds still carry stigmas. I would suggest, if you feel uncomfortable being put on the offered medication ask your pharmacist about potential side effects and also you family doctors opinion of using it for treatment, before making a choice. A lot of doctors don’t have enough time to check your whole health history after the first visit and it takes time to get to know you. Generally, they start you on the lowest dose to see how you respond.
As to her thinking you’re suidial to point of need outside intervention, perhaps consider what you may have said or how you may have acted during your visits that may have made her worried. I often when in therapy (especially if in crisis or under severe anxiety) seem worse than I really am feeling because I’m trying to be as open and honest as I can do I can get better. And our bodies often betray our secrets and/or imply we feel certain ways even when we don’t. There could be some kind of misunderstanding where she didn’t understand what you expressed or perhaps (if emotionally distressed or anxious) she could misinterpreted being tired for depressed feelings, figuring because your nervous., your face appears down, or even posture could seem like you’ve given up.
Misunderstandings are easier usually to handle than confrontations. And if things up until now have been going well, handling the misunderstanding could prevent ruining your relationship with doctor. It could also help the doctor’ opinion of your status improve because you are engaging the doc and showing your interest & trust in your health and experience.
I would suggest that if trying to see if a misunderstanding is the source doesn’t help change her opinion, then it may be time to confront her. Probably not out of anger or by going on the attack., but assertively. Because you have the right to ask why she believes you at severe risk to yourself after you’ve expressed differently, the right to question her reasons, and you have the right to know why she went to someone else instead of addressing her concerns with you. If you have some whom you can confide in, prior to confronting her about her action, that you can bring with you for support and as a witness who can help confirm to the doctor you are not suicidal currently or recently, that can help keep you calm, focused and also witness what has been going on. Afterwards they can help you decide if perhaps this doctor isn’t right for you.
I’m very sorry it’s difficult right now.
Best of luck to you and I truly hope you are able to resolve this without additionsl stress.
Hugs and support.
I believe I should feel free to confront my psychologist any time on any subject while I am under their care. I really don't see how I can I can hope to heal fully or efficiently if I am afraid to be brutally honest with my doctors. The doctors I have discussed it with agree and fully prefer the more direct approach. It can save ALLOT of time and heartache.
I fully empathize with your reluctance to use meds. I am currently managing my condition without meds, but I'm glad I let myself use them during my hardest years and will use them again, if needed. For what it's worth.
Welcome aboard, Alo. Hope you feel safe sorting through these confusions here. It's allot to sort and sometimes the sorting goes easier when shared.
Now not to scare you but I was in the hospital last winter and was refusing medications. The dr got a judge to order me to take medication. So basically I either had to choose to take them orally or they would forcibly inject me with the drugs. Mind you I was in the hospital following a suicide attempt so I was not in my right state of mind.
Kid, I really think you’ll be ok. You are scared and that is ok. Just know you have options.
