Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

Hello~ I've visited this site several times over the last year. I need to be a "regular" to give and get support. I have a beautiful family (3 girls under the age of 15)) and a husband of 25 years. He binges a few days a week. I drink every single day. 3-8 drinks (wine or gin or vodka). I even have a few in the morning while getting dressed for work which i do after the kids leave for school, or I hide it on the weekends. I'm in a top management position for a great non profit.
I had my first pancreatitis attack 2 years ago and spent 4 days in the hospital and lied to everyone about the reason except my husband.
I only quit drinking for a few weeks but have been back to it. This weekend following our neighborhood Halloween party which always involves lots of booze, I am now experiencing some of those abdominal pains. This is ridiculous. I don't want to stop completely because I like good wine so much but I know I need to.
I black out quite often, and my husband is sick of babysitting me those times, like having to wake me from a friend's couch and get me to the car. Humiliating. I want my energy back. I know that one reason I drink so much is that it "allows" me to avoid the tedious stuff such as chores, home repair, etc. If I have a drink or 2, I'm too tired to do anything. It's stupid.
So, I felt depressed this morning but no drinks (it is only 130p though). I'm not drinking today. And then tomorrow. And AA is not for me.
Thank you for reading.
Anyway, I'm glad DS is here

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...

It sounds like from what you are saying here that you do have a drinking problem and do want to stop. Reaching out and saying that is the first step.
Especially if you are drinking in the morning, especially if you are hiding it from your family, especially if you are passing out and your husband is having to take care of you, yes, you have a problem.
But that problem can be solved. It's up to you to decide what steps to take.
As you have mentioned AA is not for you. It's not for me either although I did do it for a year when I was first sober and in that year it did help. There is also SMART recovery. willpower, DS, and personally i have found working one on one with a good therapist to be extremely helpful in working on the underlying issue that were driving me to drink.
There are many paths to sobriety. I wish you the best finding yours.
Its good that you are here. Perhaps you could suggest to your husband that he join and you two support each other as you both try to quit drinking?

AA isn't for you? No biggie. I am curious as to why you say that. There are many here who have found sobriety with the help of other programs, organizations and treatments.
Perhaps they can make some alternative suggestions.
Feel free to send me a friend request maybe we can help support each other through this, I am only on day 5 ;).
I wouldn't limit my treatment options if I were you. This is such a deadly disease, I would be open to anything and everything!
AA saved my life!
You are a mom and I remember my own mother who also was a wine drinker. As a kid I can vividly remember the kitchen reeking or that red rose wine! My mother couldn't drink it like a normal person and eventually, it took her life....I was just a kid at the time and I was devastated! I carried the guilt and shame from my inability to stop her self destruction, for the next 30 years until I went into treatment for my drug and alcohol addiction which, also, nearly killed me!
I feel equally as bad for your kids as I do for you because I can identify with what they are going through!
I hope by sharing my story, I have motivated you to do everything in your power to stay sober and if you can't do it on your own then get help. There are lots of people willing to help so don't be afraid to ask!
I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
May God be with you and walk with you on your road to recovery!
God Bless!
I do recommend the Easy Way to Stop Drinking by Carr. Check out the reviews:

If you want a program, check out Women For Sobriety -- a very supportive group:

There is also SMART Recovery. There website has good reading material on the resources tab:

They've been known to work.
I'm going to check out Allen Carr's book first as that one has been recommended by several people.
Feeling ok this morning. Haven't slept worth crap the last 2 nights which I attribute to not self-medicating with booze. I'm ok with that thought. I can work through that.
Back to work.
I have not met many people who had a problem with alcohol and who willingly wanted to stop completely but alcoholism makes it a very simple choice between only two options. If you are in this position, you too have a simple choice: Continue to try and control your drinking, with the problem becoming increasingly worse until something fatal happens. Alternatively, accept that you cannot drink safely and do whatever it takes to get sober.
I could have listed a dozen good reasons for drinking so much and to me they were all genuine. However, I was ignorant about alcoholism and deluded about my drinking excuses. I drank as I did for only ONE reason I had become obsessed with alcohol and would always find a reason to justify drinking.
AA was not for me either and I would have walked over hot coals rather than have anything to do with that fellowship. Then, when all else failed I went to a meeting. That was over seven years ago and I have not taken a drink since so I probably owe my life to AA. What you do is of course your own business but when dealing with such a serious problem it is wise to keep all options open.
All the best on your journey and whatever path you take you will always be welcome here on DS.
I had to go to the grocery store last night and it was the first time in I have no idea how long that I walked past the alcohol section. I always stock up on gin and/or wine. Surprisingly, it didn't bother me. Day 4 (well, 3 1/2).
You really become aware of how much people talk about drinking. One of my colleagues and I drink often together. She is involved in politics in our city and talked about the election parties yesterday and the free booze. My agency is having a fundraiser next week and it is in a trendy distillery with free flowing house liquors. And on and on. My first test will be this weekend. My family has season college football tix. Always a party. I'm focusing on my daughters and being "good" for them.
