Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your father and I have some idea about how you feel as I had a similar experience a few years ago, although my own father never drank.
It looks to me as if there are two issues that you may need to pay attention to. First of all, although you do not have an addiction yourself, you are likely to be a victim of alcoholism because of your father’s drinking. Al-Anon would help you to work through the feelings associated with this. You are in no way to blame for your father’s drinking and you probably know that deep down but that doesn’t make it any easier to shake off the feeling.
The second issue is dealing with grief. You have not said how long it is since your dad died but grief can strike immediately after such a loss or it can suddenly appear out of the blue much later. Grief can also affect people in different ways and it may be wise to seek some form of counselling or professional help in order to deal with it.
It's not your fault Angela! There is absolutely nothing you could have done to stop your dad from committing a slow suicide! You need to let go of all that guilt!
I lost my mother in the same way you lost your dad, from alcoholic liver sirosis. I was devastated when she past and I carried that guilt with me for over 30 years. If affected every part of my life in negative ways and lead me to my own alcohol and drug addiction, later in life, that almost killed me.
By the Grace of God, I am alive today and I warn everyone who comes through here about the tendency to feel guilty over your inability to stop the madness. Guilt is very unnecessary and very destructive, preventing you from living the life you were meant to live!
It took a long time for me to realize, I cannot make decisions for others. They have to make their own decisions which is why we have free will. Then we have to accept those decisions as hard as that may be.
If you can find an acoa meeting nearby, it might help you to go to one. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers,
God Bless!
Please don't hold yourself responsible.
