Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

I am currently on day 3 of sobriety. I am on a program with my doctor to stop withdrawals. Until today I had no cravings but are being overwhelmed with them. I need to stop drinking because my body cannot take alcohol any longer otherwise I will end up dead. I have been drinking for 13 years, at one time it was only twice a week but I since went back to daily drinking. I have attended AA but have not found it a magical cure.

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...

I was killing myself with lots of booze. My liver was working overtime and there we elevated levels of enzymes in me. I was digesting myself. I remember getting the results from my dr and going straight to the bar. That was all I knew. Booze was HOW I coped. It worked for along time but then it was killing me.
I woke up on June 9 2012 and decided I was done. I went to several meetings and finally found one that worked. It is at 430 , happy hr. I was able to break the cycle and actually be happy. I had quit many times b4 but I was so miserable and sad and depressed. It doesn't have to be like that.
I liked the effect that alcohol produced. It wasn't the taste it was the numb feeling so I didn't have to deal with life. The ostrich syndrome I call it. I would just bury my head in the sand and the lions would still find me and consume me.
You have made the first step in coming here. Now go get sober. It takes action and reprogramming. Cmon!

You are doing the wise thing in taking this problem seriously. The doctor can help to address the withdrawal period but you may need to do more than just quit drinking if you are going to have long term sobriety and peace of mind.
Attending AA meetings will act as a support mechanism so maybe you could consider going back. Overcoming this problem takes total commitment and in my case I went to meetings 6 nights per week for about three months. As I drove about an hour there and an hour back, if nothing else it passed more than three hours at the time of day that I would have been drinking the most. Maybe you need to consider a similar approach.
Although attending AA meetings can help a lot, meetings alone are not always enough. The Twelve Steps are there to allow you to change your way of thinking so that alcohol will not trouble you again. That is as close to magic as I have ever seen but every good magician needs to practice a lot in order to get it right. Are you prepared to practice?
AA doesn't teach you how to stop drinking. AA teaches you how to change your way of life, so you won't have to drink.
There's no secret code or handshake at AA that's a magical cure.
There is a way to plug the jug and enjoy life, go get it

I'm glad you are getting medical guidance through this. Alcohol withdrawals can kill you.
As for AA, sometimes people feel at home at their first meeting, and others take a while to find a meeting that fits them.
Glad you're going back and congrats on your sobriety.
That is truly an amazing story. I do believe in God but have trouble believing that he answers prayers. I actually did steps 1-3 on my own but couldn't do step 4. I like the term 'ostrich syndrome'. That is me all over.
The main thing in getting sober was to get humble. I was not the center of the world and that was a hard thing to accept.
There is power in seeking out a sponsor and getting the steps done and getting the ability to hold your head high and face the Tigers and growing to be the person God wants us to be.
Be bold in recovery. Cmon!

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers,
God Bless!
But I assure you once you make it past a Christmas and a New Year's Eve/Day, the rest seems like a piece of cake.
As was said, being here is a good start, but you may need more when "life happens."
