I was put on Antabuse, but like anything else after you get used to being sick, I was drinking just as I was before, while taking it.

The old days (you get arrested now for some of things that were pulled) The somewhat magic cure was Peralidhyde,( a form embalming fluid) pour that in some and they'll sleep for a couple of days, then start the meetings, but as I say that was years ago, and today they would arrest you for some of things that were pulled.

After every meeting when we went for coffee, we had one guy that was always talking of suicide, an old timer friend, took him out side and reached under the seat and got his gun out, he told him go ahead and pull the trigger, this way we don't have to listen to you, we never him mention suicide since.

As I was told, you might as well go out and drink yourself to death, you're a failure at drinking and your a failure at A.A., man I hated that sponsor, but when we buried him last spring, I cried harder than when my own mother died.

So there is no magic pill, or anything but the kindness of a meeting.

I wanted to add, pumpkinpie made an excellent point when said, "any kind of alchol". When my father was on it before he came home we were told to remove all products w/ alchol in it i.g., mouthwash. Not only because he was an alcholic but because of the adverse with antabuse.

I drank with Antabuse and yes, the effects are very serious.

Why do people drink on it at all is the real question here, I believe.

I am in AA and found its explanation of alcoholism to be true for me so I will share it here. Ignore it if you wish, non AAers, as it will probably make no sense to you.

For me, I found that AA's Step 1 was really true for me. "We admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable."

Antabuse couldn't give me any power over alcohol because it just acted as a chemical deterrant, so Antabuse can only work if I am a heavy drinker, not a real alcoholic.

I have lost control over my own mental faculties as far as alcohol is concerned so the common sense thing doesn't work,only God can remove the drink problem for this type of alcoholic.

That is why, I believe, Antabuse is dangerous for people like me.

the whole thinking of antibuse is foreign to my way of getting sober....I never heard of antibuse until I was solid in AA......then I had no need for it my compulsion had been removed.

that is the thing Antibuse does nothing for the big compulsion to drink....it just gives results if you do the drinking....and to me sickness was a result of drinking already...puked many a times....but the thought that a fatal action could occur would definately keep me from taking that stuff....no matter what.
