Just going over a few things I read in early sobriety that I believed helped me and here is one.

Alcohol - The Great Remover


Alcohol is a product of amazing versatility.

It will remove stains from designer clothes, and will also remove the clothes from your back.

If by chance it is used in sufficient quantities, alcohol will remove furniture from the home, rugs from the floor, food from the table, lining from the stomach, vision from the eyes, judgment from the mind.

Alcohol will also remove good reputations, good jobs, good friends, happiness from children's hearts, sanity, freedom, spouses, relationships, and man's ability to adjust and live with his fellow man, even life itself.

As a remover, alcohol has no equal!

I don't think I'll drink any tonight

Ye, alcohol is versatile. It is also a great giver. It gives hangovers, dui's, free room and board in jail, it gives a sense of power, it gives slurred speech, the stagger, the blackout, the despair....

I don't think I'll drink tonight either.

Too true. It was suggested to me in early sobriety that if I wanted to go back my skuzzy watering hole, I should simply hand over my wallet, my house mortgage, my car keys, my family and friend pictures and my business card to the bartender, because they would all go anyway if I picked up that drink.

My sponsor said to me very early that anything I put before my recovery there was a good chance I would loose .(

It is so terribly true Lionel. It probably actually sounds really patronising to people when they are told this, hey it may even BE patronising, but as you said, time and experience show that this illness is like a locamotive coming at you and if you donlt step aside, take the steps you need to and even put aside certain life activities, either in the short term or forever, you can easily bust and never get back.

It's hard for many of us to do this though because our families and society for ther whole of our lives has tolfd us to succeed in and define ourselves by work, study, material things etc. So it's a MASSIVE brain shift to accept and act on the principle that we need to put a lot of that aside in the pursuit od sobriety.

This is a great post Lionel! I had never thought of it as a remover before. Only a giver as Jan said. Thank you for re-marketing the stuff...I wont drink tonight either.

yes have heard of AA as the country record being played backwards too...got my wife, dog and all my stuff back after I came to AA...haha

yes it is a remover...it can even remove life itself from you or others...do not forget that....it kills....

G/day :) I know a guy who got sober many years ago who says , If you decicide to throw a Dollar$ down on the bar, You may as well throw your wife, children. car , house and maybe your life too, Because Alcoholism knows no boundaries in removing thing from a Alcoholic.I always find John's talks very comforting , while shooting straight from the hip it creates a reality about how I drank and how it would be again for me, given "A blind spot again in the consequenses of my Drinking" :)
