Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.
My grandmother (76 y/o) has been doing treatment for MDS since June 2008 on Vidaza. It's been 10 days since she found out that MDS has progressed to Acute Leukemia. She didn't know what type of Acute Leukemia and from what I'm finding it is AML. Does anyone know if it could be something else? Her result of her bone marrow test was 38 cancer cells to every 100. So, does that mean her blasts were 38%. Also, she was supposed to go into hospital immediately for 7-10 treatment. Could that have been the 7+3 treatment or the induction phase? My grandmother did get a second opinion and it was the same - doing the 7-10 treatment with 2 week recovery. She has been told she is too old for a bone marrow transplant. She stalled on getting the 7-10 treatment as my grandfather cannot be left alone for too long. She told me her HBG = 8.9 and Platelets = 22 this past Friday. She is meeting with the Dr. again this coming Friday to see if she has other options for treatment. I have never liked her Dr. and can't believe she is waiting so long to see her again, especially since she wanted to get her into the hospital immediately.
I have been reading a lot on the internet and forums trying to get an idea of how fast this can progress and would love to get some feedback from others that have gone through this or know someone that has. I live over 2,000 miles away and want to get an idea of when I should go see her before she gets too sick.

Is anyone here allergic to Sulfa that is currently taking Diamox? I have been diagnosed with IH now for almost 2 years. I am allergic to Sulfa drugs meaning that my throat will swell up so my Neurologist put me on Topamax. My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I hope that your grandmother has opted for treatment. The medications that they now give for nausea are incredibly effective. I may not be the norm, but I never vomited once during two inductions, a consolidation and preparation for a bone marrow transplant (including total body irradiation). I know that she is not a candidate for transplant. I also know that many people are cured with chemo alone. Give her a pep-talk. It might be a long road, but at least there is a chance that the road will lead her again to good health.,
Tomorrow my sister, niece, and I will be starting our journey from NY to TX. My sister is moving back to be able to help my grandmother and grandfather. I believe my grandmother is leaning towards the less-invasive daily shots for 5 days, but will find out more when I am down there. She is getting lab today and will speak with the doctor next Friday.
Thanks Cliff (xuelan) for your reply. Its great that you have had success! I do not know your age, but my grandmother is too old for transplant. I havent found where intense chemo is that beneficial for her age group and survival is low. Therefore, she knows where she stands and I have to be supportive and respectful of her decision. She has been fighting MDS for over four years. During that time, my grandfathers health has declined the past three years, she lost her son over 2 years ago, and she is probably wanting the last part of her life to be around her family and not in a hospital.
I will keep posting and give my support, when I can. I see this as some comfort for me with some great feedback and support!
