I met my boyfriend June 2017 with no intention to date but soon fell head over heels for him, and it was reciprocal, at a time I thought I would never love again from having loved my ex too much (I was 3 years single). After only 3 weeks of dating I found out my boyfriend had been lying about his last name. He then proceeded to explain that 7 years prior he had done 1 year jail time for possession of child pornography. It was evidently very hard for him to tell me this and he thought I’d stop the relationship. I didn’t. He told me it was a mistake, that he was downloading so much porn he didn’t know there was children in that. He said “but I’m not a pedophile!” I willingly entered that relationship and informed him that I would forever treat him as a potential pedophile and he would have restrictions if he would enter this relationship with me because I couldn’t live with the guilt if he were to do something and I had known about his criminal past but had still left him alone with a child. I asked myself from the get go if I could spend my life, and have a child with a fantastic man like him if he had pedophilia. I’m an educated person and already knew a great deal about pedophilia (to be differentiated from incestuous fathers and child molesters) and already had a non-judgemental view of pedophiles. Fast forward 6 months, my boyfriend has now admitted to me that he is a pedophile, that he has never touched a child and that he hopes he never will but that it is a revolting, crippling battle in his head as he has sexual desire most particularly for young boys (as young as 7, prefers them around 12). My boyfriend feels very lonely to have to constantly hide but I came to realize that I probably feel even lonelier. He knows he’s not alone, there are many pedophiles out there, he met tons in jail, his specific type of pedophilia is very well described in the littérature. But how many knowingly willing girlfriends of pedophiles is there in the world? I suspect much much less than there are pedophiles
