Women who Love too Much Community Group
WHEN BEING IN LOVE, MEANS BEING IN PAIN... This group is to help women through the journey of realizing they can love themselves. To help realize that they are capable of having a happy, healthy, whole relationship and break the cycle of abuse and heartache from loving emotionally unavailable men.

Hello,
The guy that lives around the corner told me that he was interested in me what followed was a phone conversation, a couple of text, and talk on my porch in the middle of the night. What he did do for me is make me come running back to the group and reread the Book.
He smokes weed daily-all day long. He does not work, he sells weed. He is raising his son alone or rather with the older lady that he lives with. I am slightly attracted to him physically but none whatsoever in other areas. What happened was that night on the porch I wanted him to want me. I tried to keep the conversation going, I tried to be interesting, likeable. What I realized was that I had no healed and that a year off did not change my patterns.
My interaction with him scared me. He said he was not happy in his relationship. He was looking for a good woman, he was ready to settle down. He keeps saying "i want to see you" but would never make a plan. He really wanted to come in my house- cheap, easy. Knowing all of this why did I even entertain the thought. He was as unavailable as the married guy from the gym that I try to avoid- while trying to keep his attention.
Since that meeting on my porch he has not attempted to contact me at all- and then last night at 11:30 he texted me- I was asleep. I woke up this morning looked at my phone and immediately I started to text him and say " Im sorry I missed your text last night, I was asleep. Good morning." Then my mind started to do what it always does and that is validate his absence or lack of interest. Maybe I said something wrong, maybe he thought I didn't like him. Oh, let me not forget to mention that the most of our conversation were about him saying my car is always home and I must never go anywhere or do anything. I kept trying to explain to him what I do and who I am but he would not hear it. I felt like he was putting me down and he kept saying oh, no I mean it in a nice way. It felt like a put down and he would not validate my experience- that is not a new pattern that I have with men.
I didn't text him back nor do I intend to. I don't have to delete his number or block him. I have to choose. I prayed and asked God for help and I told God that if he puts up a good effort I don't know that I will be able to not do it. Because at first I was telling myself I can just hang out with him and not want him. I have told myself that lie countless times. I cant just hang out, I cant just talk on the phone. I eventually start wanting them to want me, I start making their every move and behavior about me and my worth. Then I asked myself do you even want him and the answer is no but hell the answer really always has been no with most of the men I have ever dated. Despite everything I know I must be honest that if he calls during the day or comes by my home I am not sure I would turn him away. It took about a week before I stopped watching my phone like a hawk and even now when I go outside I still look to see if his car is home.
I can already see how he would give me crumbs, pop in and out of my life when it was convenient for him. I can hear the empty promises, I can feel the disappointment, I can feel the obsession, the wanting and waiting. Others would look at him and wonder how any woman could see him differently than he is. They don't have WWT2M eyes. In my eyes the woman he is staying with is not an obstacle- she barely exists in my mind. The little boy I would help raise. I could help him stop smoking weed- find him a job. Teach him how to be open, counsel him into being what I really want. I could ride off this fantasy for years all the while suffering in the relationship. Knowing all this I still struggled not to respond to his text.
I know that on a bad emotional day for me I will be tempted to call him. I know that I am avoiding my own pain, I know that this really is not about him but really about my own struggle with a life long pattern of trying to fix childhood trauma. I know that my caretaking is really about feeling safe and attempting not to be abandoned. But I also know that right now my no's are weak. My resolve to not do it again is paper thin. I wont make fake promises to you guys or too myself. He is not a strong temptation what the temptation is the avoidance, the fantasy, the "what if this is the real one" it is the what if no one ever comes, what if he is it. It is the fear of being alone, the fear of not being loved or lovable, accepted or validated. It is the desire to avoid the childhood feeling of being cast out, thrown away, of dying from a lack of love and care. That fear is still so strong in me that I cannot blame myself for trying to fix it by any means necessary. I am praying not that he loves me, not that he accepts me, not that this be the "one." My prayer today and it will be all day- that God cover and protect me from my own disease. I am not strong enough yet not to do it so just take him away. Let me miss every phone call, let me sleep through every text message. Change my mind and help to ease my own terror. I told God the truth. I cant do it by myself I need His help.

I keep trudging along though, even when the battles in my head are keeping me doubting that it will ever pass. Yesterday I had a date with a very nice, respectful, attractive, interesting guy. I woke up yesterday morning terrified and dying to text the last guy. I logically knew this was my "disease" talking, and that the terror was about letting go of the fantasy, and facing the possibility of being really seen. But I sucked it up, got through the day, got myself ready for the date. In excruciating pain, feeling like I would die if I didn't reach out to the last guy, beg him to not make me keep trying to find someone else when everything in me is telling me he is the one, that it is just cruel to me and any unsuspecting new nice guy to keep trying to pretend that is not the case. But I kept my crazy to myself, and didn't text. I had a nice time, could even see myself being attracted to my date in a healthy, gradual way. He followed up today to say how much he enjoyed our time together and the inner healthy me agrees and is looking forward to our next date this weekend. But the voice who is still running the show, in my head, is still terrorizing me. Thoughts of the last guy are there from the minute I wake until I go to sleep and even in dreams. Everything is a reminder that makes that voice even louder. Craving to see him, talk to him, be with him.
I want more than anything to get rid of this pain. And the harder I try, the harder my unhealthy brain fights back. Racing heart, chest pains, trouble breathing, whenever I face the prospect of letting go of the fantasy of him. I'd like to be at a point like you guys that I can be strong enough with the help of a higher power, and I keep listening with open ears. I guess that's the best thing to focus on for now? That and swimming. I've discovered being in the pool is the one place where I feel at home in my own skin. Even if I have to walk past his house to get to the pool to get to that place. This week I made myself get to the pool, and once I was in the water, I told myself, "phew. You did it. You are safe here." Maybe that's something to build upon?
I loved reading your post. It felt like I could see, hear, and imagine you in my mind. During one of my many break up from my last boyfriend, I was sitting in the pick up line waiting for my son to get out of school. I had followed the advice of others and deleted his number- I did not have it memorized. Suddenly there was this little thought that I should call him and it built momentum quickly. I was frantic, I was antsy, I felt like holding still and not calling him would kill me. I called my phone company and asked them to look his number up I thought it started 9 something. They said they could not do that I would have to go online. I tried going on line but could not find it. Finally I went through the white pages and found his mothers phone number and called her- he lived at home. When we talked it was bitter sweet. I was trying to hide the fact that I had jumped through hoops to call him. He kept saying why did you call me and I said I don't know. In some ways it is why I never could understand no contact. Fine I block him but what will stop me from contacting him. Having him call is hard but what happens when I am the one attempting to contact. Truthfully, every time I don't call it builds my confidence. I don't delete the number because I take pride in the fact that I didn't need to.
My belief in God brings peace and doubt. As of right now all I can say is that I am willing just like you are with a listening ear. It helps to pray that is why I do it- it gives me something else to focus my attention on. When I was in my relationship I would do things so that he would not accuse me of not having a life outside of him but when I really took an interest in something he would find a way to punish me or sabotage it. If he wanted to hang out with his friends he would say I was just jealous because I did not have any. When all my friends came over for my birthday he went upstairs. If I went out with friends he would say "oh that nice" and down play it. If I took my son out he would be sick when I called later. He only wanted me when he wanted me. He promised to change, promised to try. I heard "next time" so many times I felt like I was living in a time warp.
I understand your pain. Even after we broke up I still wanted him. A couple of months ago he contacted my sister in law on face book and told her to tell me to call him. I never did. He had given me just enough time to move on with a new fantasy. I was already fantasizing about the next guy- I had a new obsession for my ongoing addiction. It took me 8 or 9 months to stop wanting him but I still want men. Honestly, I was to embarrassed to give my sister in law my number for him. Had he called me directly this might be a different story. See if found him even after I deleted his number. He threw out some half assed attempt to contact me. My number is listed and if he tried hard enough he could find it. I live at the same address. He knows that. He knows where my son goes to school he knows what time and where I drop him off at. He knows the gym that I go to. But he has and never will jump through hoops to find me and for that I can only be grateful. Hang in there you are not alone.
Keep working at it and fighting off the urges IZZY. If you continue to analyse it and talk about it and dwell on it it will stay fresh in your mind and drive you insane. Like Tokyo suggested, try moving forward with what is working positively in your life. Talk to yourself and be your own parent. Even though it is difficult and scary and feels awkward and useless and dumb, do the things that others tell you will work. Rely on others thinking at moments when you are weakest and have trust and faith in them that they have always had your back and care about you.(US here and your healthy friends).
I feel that left to our own thinking we are doomed. We need to pass our ideas by healthy people before we act. And we need to act on healthy ideas before we THINK about them.
Wow, I can see how much we're all struggling. It reminds me that I'm not the only one and also that it's very hard to change our patterns (as Shani says). Obcessing over one guy and then another seems to have been the story of my life. I'm thinking that, if obcession is because we're avoiding our own stuff, then self-acceptance and self-love -- REAL self-acceptance / self-love, neither of which are easy -- have got to be the answer.
Luckily my current man is very patient with me, we have total open communication. He is a widower and I'm newly divorced (not my choice) I had to explain what "the walls" were that I talk about on occasion. He gets it, he understands it and is helping me work through my insecurities, I have many and it's so freeing to be able to talk about our spouses (his wife, my ex) openly. It's very helpful and has helped me move forward. I still struggle almost daily with thoughts of my ex but I am letting go, slowly.
I am sorry there is so much pain here, but it is also comforting to know I'm not the only one either, so thank you ladies for being so open about your feelings. I wish I could hug each and every one of you!!!!!!!!!
Thank you all for the support today. It is almost eight here. I went to late water aerobics class. It was boring as hell but I am proud of myself for at least trying it. I will try different instructor different day. He did not call, I did not see him, and besides how I felt in bed this morning when I saw his text- I didn't even worry too much about him today. Months ago I would have texted him back- a year ago I would have called, texted, and repeat. Today I wanted to but didn't. I will admit that every time my phone rang today I hesitated, when my door bell rung I go a bit excited. I didn't feel like I was going crazy today and I must take that as a small victory.
Maybe it was just the Universe giving me a small test. I think I passed maybe not with flying color but I made it in.
Thank you for reminding me that not only do I not want to keep chipping away at my self-esteem trying to find a way to be with someone who doesn't want me, I also don't want to be with someone who constantly tears me down. Indeed, everyday that I don't text him is a day I can build my confidence, not just endure the withdrawal. For the first time in a while, I woke up with a break from the dread of another day without him, and instead with a sense of relief that I escaped a life sentence of feeling like I could never be good enough, and a glimpse of hope that if I keep at it with surrounding and filling myself with positive thoughts and feelings and only allowing myself to have positive interactions with people I don't have to teach how to be nice, that maybe I will be well on the road to believing that I am worthy of everything the people who love me keep telling me I deserve.
Of course, we'll see how well that works the next time I run into him. But at least today I am content with finding him to be a not nice person that has no business being allowed anywhere near my good heart.
