A forum of healing and help for wives of alcoholics.
i am having a rough night. After a day of what i thought was a good family day, i noticed the switch in behavior. He became mean, swearing in front of our 2 year old and just verbally abusive. Of course he kept denying it until i caught him with the bottle of vodka in his hand. We sat down to talk which i know should be pointless when he is like this. He basically said he drinks because of me. I have caused him all the stress that causes him to drink. I know i shouldn’t believe him but it hurts. It just hurts so bad to be told you are the reason. he has hurt me so much over the years and i have worked so hard to try to help him. And the thing he says i drove him to drink today, is just stupid. We got somewhere late today and it was crowded and i made a comment that we should have gotten there earlier. I took too long to get ready so it was me that made us late. He said i was criticizing him and that is what caused him to drink. I don’t even understand how he thinks i was criticizing him, i said it was my fault for not getting there earlier. And for the whole conversation he went on about all the things about me that make him drink. I know i have gotten upset and yelled at him or given him the silent treatment when i have caught him drinking. But it is hard when someone has lied over and over again to you. I am frustrated because i feel so hurt by him and i don’t think he understands. Once he sobers up he think everything is ok and all should be forgiven. And during the conversation he says i am overly critical of his drinking and he is doing so much better. He just admitted about 2 years in addition to his drinking he was addicted to Xanax and now he isn’t taking it so i shouldn’t be so critical. I just feel so hurt.

Hi. This is my first post. I'm here because my husband is an addict and it's having a negative impact on our marriage and my emotional and mental well being. He's an alcoholic who is also addicted to pornography and video gaming. He spends every moment that he isn't at work or sleeping drinking beer, playing his video games, and looking at porn. He's completely pushed me out of his life. We don't...
He is projecting his whole witch’s brew of unhappiness and malapted behavior on you because it Is an easy cop out and the path of least resistance for him to avoid all responsibility for his problems and deplorable behavior. It also reinforces the power and control he wants to have by making you feel awful about yourself.
I don’t know the reasons that motivate him to drink, but I do know, absolutely, IT ISN’T YOU. That is the oldest trick in the book, like a little kid blaming their imaginary friend for a broken toy.
I hope your day today is more settled.
May the force be with you.
Best of luck hope today is better for you X
The entire conversation/argument/blame on you is just how the alcoholics are. You have to understand they will say ANYTHING to distract from their problem. And they will say anything that will hurt you. Mine is mean when he's not drunk, because he wants the alcohol. And as a rule, I don't comment on his alcohol use anymore. I just stay busy in another room.
I used to think he was an asshole, but then I realized that he's not an asshole, he's an ALCOHOLIC and this is how they act.
You have to realize that you need to not be hurt by his words. He's wrong and his words don't count. I just look at mine and think "whatever, stupid" and walk away. I don't engage him at all. You need to not care what he says that hurts you.
Right now I'm just keeping the arguments to a minimum and as long as there's no physical violence I'm staying. It's funny how since I don't care anymore, I have nothing to argue about. I think it's called detachment, and it's working. I'm strong too. His name calling and such bounce right off of me. BUT if he crosses the violence line, I'd be out in a heartbeat. Money or no money. Hang in there. But if your kid is only 2, you may want to get out of there. He probably doesn't want to deal with a 2 year old. (That's what people told me 12 years ago. I didn't listen. I have 6 years of this shit to go.)
