It'll be 2 years next month for me and I took them off afterwards and wore them around my neck for awhile. Sometimes I'll put them back on just because; I actually wore them for this past month and took them off Monday. Do what feels right for you.

Hi Kim. I stopped wearing my engagement ring immediately after my husband died. I wore the wedding band on my left hand for about six months and then I switched it to my right hand. It will probably stay on my right hand for the rest of my life. The only exception would be if I ever gave my heart to another man......................then I would put the wedding ring away.

This is one area of social etiquette which has no "rules" so we all have to decide what feels right for us.

I often had swelling in hands and would remove my rings but when my husband passed I wore his band on a chain. A few months prior to what would have been our 25 th wedding anniversary (2 years after his passing) I took his band, my engagement and wedding bands and also a chain I had bought him . I had these melted and redesigned into a pendant that I wear on a long chain that can be inside my shirt if need be .

Hi Kimberlina, I was obsessed with this question for months after my husband died suddenly 2 years ago. I met a lot of widows and it was my number one question. In the end I simply took it off 1 year out as I was heading out for a walk and I never put it back on. It did help me to let go and accept that he was really gone. My memories of him live in my heart and I'm okay with that.

My husband died suddenly 4 months ago and I am still wearing my engagement and wedding ring. I do not intend to take it off as my hand looks bare without them. It's okay.. I do not have plans to date or appear "single" in at least the next 5 years or so. Until my oldest turns 18 (she's turning 13 soon), I made a promise to my kids that I will not date and that my focus will be on working and taking care of them.

I am so sorry for your loss.. it is almost 6 months since my husband passed and I have no desire to take it off yet.. i would say when you feel that you are ready then you should take it off. There is really no set time when dealing with grief... i think that when it's time, you will know

I have a window friend who is two years in and she wears them sometimes and doesn't others. I wear his and mine together on my left hand. I use mine to keep his from slipping off. I have no desire to take it off. It's been 8 months.

Hi Kim. Wedding rings are such a personal matter. No right. No wrong. Just follow your heart. I removed mine 2 weeks after Juanita died. Some wear their wedding ring for the rest of their days. Some try it without, and back on it goes. There seems to be such a finality and realization that they are gone from us when our ring is removed. Regardless of the when and if's, it is the memories of the life we shared together that we treasure in our hearts always. ~~~ Scottie

Sophia2002 that is exactly what I am doing. For our 25th anniversary we up graded and it holds his ring closest to my heart. I too have thought about melting our original gold bands down and having something made. I am not a big jewelry person. Kim, as has been said by others already, this is a personal choice. Just a thought though; it appears to me it's a matter of what your future desires, needs and wants are, which will include your age in the equation. The general consensus seems to be, if you leave your rings on your left hand ring finger it will broadcast that you are, unbeknownst otherwise to others, that you married. If you move them to your right hand then that sends the message that you are widowed. If you remove them completely (and or do something else with them) then it sends the signal that you are not married, period. The number of years you were married will also play into it.......... As for me, after 50+ years of marriage and 4+ years of being widowed, I still wear my wedding ring on my left hand ring finger and it "does" broadcast that I am still married and not interested; even to those that know that I'm widowed, and I'm okay with this. It's Your Choice, and yours alone.

My feeling around this is that I wear the my wedding ring because I am still very married. The fact that my husband is in heaven now does not mean I am no longer married. I talk to him every second of every day and I believe he hears me and he is with me always, just not in a physical form. We promised each other forever, he has done his part, I carry on to do my bit.

My husband died over three years ago. about a year after he passed I had our jeweler put my wedding band and engagement ring over his wedding band and fasten them on. His band was only one size bigger than mine and it was bent on one side so it stays on well. I moved it from my left had to my right last year. I was thinking of having them melted down and the diamond set in the nugget but I am not quite ready for that. Do whatever feels right.
