Tammy (a girlfriend of mine) said that about 6 months or so after her husband Barry passed that she got a call claiming that the collection agency had recently contacted him and he had set up a payment arrangement on an old medical bill.
I am sure their ears were bleeding before she let them off the line.
Hang in there. I just tell them my husband just passed away...usually they say they are sorry and hang up.
For the telemarketer, I do what Marsha mentioned: 'I'm not interested, and please don't call this number again.' I then hang up before I can hear what they're trying to say as I disconnect.
One thing I try not to do is say that my husband has died. That type of information leaves us vulnerable, because the person on the other end of the phone could be someone canvassing the neighborhood for an easy target. Who knows? Early on, I did that before realizing that I was telling them up front that I was alone and without protection. Just my thoughts. TJ
When I heard it was Chase I told them my husband had JUST died (in ICU) and the woman started screaming at me - guess she thought it was a joke or something. I couldn't believe it.
Thanks
We take so much crap and our hearts are broken for a very long time. No need to torture ourselves further by spending what little time we have "not crying" talking to a stranger that hasn't a clue as to what we are going through.

Don't tell them your husband passed. There are some terrible people out there. Also, this could lead them to sell your name to other pesty callers.
It it is a telephone interviewer, just get yourself disqualified. Answer yes to one of the first five questions. Example, have you done an interview in the last 6 months?" Say yes, and they'll say goodbye and the interviewer won't get blamed for not getting the interview.
