When my husband was here this wasn't a problem. I rescued a dog back in October with the intention of retiring in a few months. I retired in March and was tempted back into the working world a month later. So, now I have the dog and a job. Bad combination. My previous job was so close I could come home daily and take her out. No restriction on lunch time either.
Now, the new job is way too far to come home. I've hired a dog walker and will use day care too.
My problem is holidays. Some of them the dog walker is not available, meaning my dog must stay home 11 hours with no way out. The daycares around here won't take her for the amount of hours I'll need.
So, my question is to the dog owners. Do you think 11 hours in a crate is a bad thing? Like I said this will only happen every now and then.

I am mystified at the intensity of the concern that people have about their pets.
I know that I am not a dog lover, but you guys are being way too serious about this. That is if your are not kidding - maybe I missed the joke?

I have a fenced in yard so the have plenty of room to play.

I would never give her up, but if I did she would not be rescued. She was given up twice and is black. There is something called black dog syndrome where black dogs are not adopted as fast.
She and I are a team.

Later, I bought the fence that goes with the open-wire crate. It hooks onto one end and then forms a rectangular pen as it comes around to the other side. That is where her puppy pads stay all the time ~~ inside the pen. She is fine there for a long time.
Now, when I am gone overnight, my daughter comes out and takes her out and plays with her too. If I am leaving for a few days, I found a wonderful woman who LOVES animals. She takes wonderful care of my baby. She dog sits for several people at her house, and has several dogs herself.
Yes, it can get expensive!! Now, I have two dogs, because my sister is in a nursing home and I have her little Miniature Dachshund too. She is a jumper and when I am gone ~~ she jumps out of the pen. So, now, she has to stay inside the open-wire crate ~~ with the door locked. She is so small (7 lbs,). that the crate is plenty big enough for her. She has room for her food and water, a puppy pad and her blanket. So, she does fine if I'm gone quite a while too.
Of course, I'm seldom gone for that long. Usually, they are running around the house, or lying close to me (sleeping), when I'm in my recliner. We go for a walk or two a day ~~ according to the weather.
I don't know how big your dog is, but, a pen connected to an open-wire crate is good for smaller dogs. Both of mine stay in theirs any time I am gone or when I go to bed. They know where to go when I am getting ready to leave. I give them a treat once they are inside the pen and they are happy.
