Widows & Widowers Support Group
This community is dedicated to those who have lost a husband, wife, or partner. Anything is open for discussion here, with the hope that we can focus on grief, bereavement, life after loss, and continuing on after a great loss.

Hi all. I lost my wife of 40 years on the 14th of February 2016 to ALS. I thought I would be prepared when the time came since she was diagnosed 4 years ago but I've found that knowing the end was coming in no way prepared me for her loss. Since that time it's been just me and my dog trying to cope with daily life. We had 3 kids during our marriage but their lives have taken them in different directions which I can't complain as they are doing well, just not here. My daughter came home this weekend and set my Christmas tree up for me but I just am not in the Christmas mood this year, just going through the motions, feeling lost. Thanks for letting me join you and looking for better days ahead, hopefully.

Just thought I would join this group now that I am a widower. My wife passed away May 28th. She was "The Wind Beneath My Wings". When I met her, I was a drunken, dope smoking, fighting, hell raising biker. She told me if I could get rid of the inner storm within me, that I could be a blessing to people. God placed her in my path to stop me. I have been drug and alcohol free now for 53...

Today I feel grateful. Grateful for my dog Blue (Blue Jean Baby Queen, Prettiest girl I've ever seen). Grateful I'm still kickin'. Grateful I'm finally taking responsibility for my health. Grateful I own my home. Grateful for good friends and neighbors who watch over me. Grateful to God for His everlasting love and patience with me. Grateful I survived the 10 years since my wife of 30 years...

I could relate to your pain, since I lost my wife of 35 years to cancer and like you I knew the end was coming and like you it was not easy. Also is very funny you mention the dog, since I am also taking care of my wife dog and the kids have their life to live. I went to counseling for the first 6 months and then join a grieving group. We now have Dinner twice a month and life without my wife is more bearable. I wish you the best of luck in your journey.
I am so sorry for you pain. I cannot imagine how hard it is to watch someone suffer the way you mush have. I have seen it with my dad and my grand dad. My husband had cancer back in 2002 (lung cancer) but amazingly he survived. He was on oxygen but still worked and had some quality of life. He passed away suddenly here at home on September 18th. I still cannot believe it. My kids are grown as well. My youngest has Downs Syndrome so he is with me and I so grateful for him. One of my married daughters and her husband are staying with me for a while as they moved back from New York to be here for his dad as he has cancer. I always wonder how different it is for men versus women. I am lucky because I took care of most of the business and all the house stuff. But I miss that feeling of safety that my husband gave me. I hope this group helps you and brings you some comfort. I have me a few really nice friends who can totally relate and share in your grief. Take care :-j Hugs Jeanne
I am so sorry for your loss. I am so glad that you have joined this group. There is nothing that can prepare you for this grief journey. Although it has been several years for me, my healing has been hindered by other significant family losses. I am not one to post often; however, I am on this site almost daily. You will find support and comfort here from others who understand your loss. Roxanne
I lost my husband of 41 years, but it was instant, with no illness to warn me.
You will find some comfort here.
All my best to you,
Barb.
