I went out with friends to a movie tonight. It was bittersweet. First the movie was horrendous, and it was at a theater that my husband and I used to go to. The last time we were there, I remember him holding my hand. I only had partial vision back then, so I nearly fell as we were walking in the parking lot. It would have been a horrible fall, too--off a high step--but my husband grabbed me and held on tight. He was my protector. But now, I'm alone.

I felt that profoundly tonight as I walked towards the theater by myself. I saw couples walking hand-in-hand, and single people too. I thought--how many are like me? There's no one to stop me from falling now. At least not in earthly flesh. Instead, it's up to me to make sure I'm safe. It's a tiresome job and a very lonely one too.
