Widows & Widowers Support Group
This community is dedicated to those who have lost a husband, wife, or partner. Anything is open for discussion here, with the hope that we can focus on grief, bereavement, life after loss, and continuing on after a great loss.
I thought one good thing about moving to a new town was leaving the past behind but that never really happens. I can now pick and choose who I tell I am a widow or at least I thought that. My brother was fixing up the house a week before I can. Neigbhors came over thinking he owned the place. He explained his sister was moving in, a recent widow. I am OK with them knowing, maybe they will keep an extra eye out for me. What I was not prepaired for was them asking how my husband died. My story is like many others, my husband had a drinking problem. He was diaganosed with cirrohsis of the liver last year. He stopped drinking, and started taking care of himself. A bad fall and his reluctance at going to the doctor lead to his organs closing down due to internal bleeding. In the end his bad liver led to his death as his body put too much strain on in. Yes, he died of liver failure. I don't want them to think he was a raging alcholic who drank himself to death, I am proud of the time he was sober. I also have teenagers and I don't want them to hear about their father that way.
Yesterday I had a contractor giving me a quote. Me being a recent widow came up, he immediately asked what he died of and when I told him he asked me if he drank. WTF! I lied and changed the subject. I have met people over the years and they have told me they losed a loved one, I don't think I have ever asked them why, it seems so insensitive. I am getting to the point I feel like I should just say he had a heart attack, something quick. I don't want to be mean or rude and don't feel like calling out people for not being sensitive but this is really bothering me. I guess we have all been asked stupid questions. Let me know what you have been asked, sometimes hearing others experiences makes ours not so bad.

Today I feel grateful. Grateful for my dog Blue (Blue Jean Baby Queen, Prettiest girl I've ever seen). Grateful I'm still kickin'. Grateful I'm finally taking responsibility for my health. Grateful I own my home. Grateful for good friends and neighbors who watch over me. Grateful to God for His everlasting love and patience with me. Grateful I survived the 10 years since my wife of 30 years...

So I have not been asked since. I hope I never again will be. I let them know I did not appreciate that comment and they knew she had medical problems for yrs and yrs.. If they wanted to remain a friend it was up to them, but nobody is talking about my Princess. They apologized and have been over a few times since. My point would be not to lie but be very blunt its not their business .
Cliff was a recovering alcoholic, and had been clean and sober 20 years when he died, so I understand how upsetting it can be for you and the kids if that were what people remembered about your husband. That wasn't what he was about.
I kind of like Sharon's idea to ask them why, but I'd probably also want to say something smartass, too. Probably "internal bleeding after an accident" is the best response. If they press for details, I'd say I really didn't want to discuss it right now.
It's amazing how insensitive people can be.... hang in there...
Love and Hugs,
Martha
