House was broken into

I went to work for about 3 hours this morning. When I got home, my TV was missing and my dog was barking in the back yard. I should have just walked back out the front door, but I went looking to see what was wrong with the dog. My back door to the garage was busted through, and the dog was barking like crazy. He doesn't do this normally. I stayed in the back yard and called the police. They searched the house, looked for finger prints, but nothing. I'm lucky it was only the TV, but now I have to get someone to replace my back door. They busted my gate too, but it wasn't in too good of shape anyway. I tried to hammer the gate back together and couldn't, so I got duck tape and it works for now. I can't get the door back, so I'll spend the night at my sister's.
If my husband was here, there would be no problem. He would have everything secure in a couple of hours.
I have an alarm, but was only using it while I slept, now it will be armed at all times. It's terrible, having to be afraid, to stay in your own house.

I had someone come over today, and secure the door. He's coming back next week, and replacing it. It's the door to the garage, that leds outside. I still have one that has the alarm on it, that goes into the house, from the garage. I spent the night at my sister's, last night. I'm turning the alarm on, everytime I leave the house now. It was stupid of me not to use it all the time. Just one of those habits we have to get into.

deauxgirl, I'm assuming you have a sign and stickers on your windows. What I'm wondering now is if it was someone who knew you didn't set it all the time when you left.

Yeah, I have the signs and stickers. The cops said there have been a number of these in our neighborhood. They are stealing copper tubing out of the air conditioners too. Glad they didn't do that. It seems the same type of thing was happening in Lakeview a couple of months ago. My doctor told me, that one person she knows had 2 dogs shot, while they were robbing this person's house. I think that was in New Orleans. I'm glad it was in the morning. I have lights that go on in the back yard, if someone passes it.

I think this is just what I needed, to give me a kick in the butt, to start getting things done around the house. So I begin.

As everyone else has said -- GLAD you and the dog are ok! I hate that this happened to you.
My sister's home was burglarized one Sat. afternoon -- while she was gone for 2 hours!!! They stole everything they could get out the door. She had a lot of jewelry - both costume and REAL and several jewelry boxes that were stolen, or turned upside down into a pillow case. Yep, HER pillowcase. They had things thrown all over the house!! It was a true mess. She didn't get anything back and we were never certain if they were caught or not. There were 3 people caught stealing a few months later and lots of things were found, but, not my sister's. I know we were all upset over the robbery, and were grateful that she wasn't home. She lives alone, also.
I hope you have the door fixed and remember to set the alarm.

This also happened to a friend of mine shortly after her husband died I just can't believe how low people sink. For myself I have 3 dogs and I have some other sources of self protection in the house. I also belive in the phone by the bed and forming solid relationships with the neightbors. No system is perfect. I will be praying for you recovery from this awful event.
