When Cliff died, we had to wait until the Medical Examiner's Office determined the official cause of death before the death certificate could be completed and released. The hospital may not have had the authority to issue the official cause of death for your friend. It may have been a legal issue as the death was "sudden and unexpected".

Cliff died in Florida. The funeral home took care of getting the death certificates for me. I think I ordered 8 to start with as we jointly owned bank accounts, property, the car, and two businesses, in addition to knowing I would need one for the life insurance claim.

I asked for 10 certificates and they were around $10 each- I The used most of them and only have two left. The funeral home ordered them for me and they were sent to my house.

Mine were from the mortyary and had to pay $10 each. Social security told me they did not need one from me when applying for benefits for my children. They implied they had been informed. Most states have a Vital Records department where certified death certificates can also be obtained.

My husbanb passed in Dec. 2010 suddenly in the city of New Orleans. The coroner had to preform all required tests, wait for the results and then send them to vital records. Well vital records received the information but is in the process of changing locations. I had to pay for all requested official certificates . My funeral director put in the request. I requested 10. As of today I have not received one. I told the Office of Vital Records I am on the verge of getting a lawyer because it should not take 3 months to ge a death certificate.

Florida.......the funeral home gave me a total of ten.......only four were notarized. Unsure of the costs. Know that I used at least six more than were provided. Hope that helps.

NC here, I got 10, the medical school bigbear donated his boy to got them for me at no cost to me.....so far any that I've had to send or give to anyone has either made a copy of the original or didn't need it after seeing it and mailed them back to me, so I've gotten them all back.

I got them through the funeral home. In Maryland they are $20 each copy. I needed one for each vehicle, the bank, life insurance, SS, and anything I had to change title to or change the account into my name. Some places made a copy of the original and gave me back the original document. You can get extra certificates if you need them from your state's vital statistic bureau at a cost. It just seems like an outrageous sum of money added to the total confusion of just having lost your spouse.

I think I had to pay $15.00 for each original in Iowa; but many places were able to take copies. I think the only places I needed originals for were the lawyer who handled the will and the life insurance companies.

In Illinois when my husband died on 7/7/07 the funeral home supplied me with as many as i needed at no cost...When my daddy died on 3/28/08 they again supplied me with as many as needed a no additional cost....Carla from Illinois

The funeral director gave me twelve, I think. He said if I needed additional I would have to pay for them.
